W E CHOSE TO CREATE THIS PRODUCT SO THAT CHILDREN COULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASSEMBLE A MARBLE ROLLER COASTER AND DESIGN A UNIQUE TRACK TO THE EXTENT OF THEIR IMAGINATION . 2

  3. 4/4/2017 CONCEPTUAL DESIGN • This design arose from sketching our idea of a marble track. We wanted to create a design that had a working conveyor belt so that the roller coaster would work continuously. • Subsequent design iterations altered the base of the toy and fleshed out the conveyor belt. 3

  4. 4/4/2017 Life Size ACTUAL MODEL W HAT DID WE BUILD ? • A 1’ : ¼” SCALED MODEL OF OUR TOY CAD Model W HY WE BUILT IT ? • - S O WE WOULDN ’ T HAVE TO USE THE WORKSHOP AS MUCH AS THE OTHER GROUPS . - W E CAN USE THE MODEL TO GIVE THE GENERAL OUTLINE OF OUR TOY , WHERE THE CAD DESIGN WOULD SHOW THE DETAILS . H OW WE BUILT IT ? • - W E LASER CUT THE CENTRAL SUPPORT , THE BASE , AND THE CONVEYOR BELT FLAPS . W E USED STRAWS FOR THE PVC TRACK , A RUBBER BAND FOR THE CONVEYOR BELT , AN WE 3D PRINTED THE MARBLE CATCHER . - A LL THE PIECES ARE ATTACHED TO EACH OTHER USING WOOD GLUE AND SUPER GLUE . 4

  7. 4/4/2017 FEEDBACK • O UR CUSTOMERS THOUGHT THE IDEA WAS COOL FOR SIX YEAR OLDS . • B RYCE ' S LITTLE BROTHER SAID HE WOULD PLAY WITH THE TOY . • A LEX ' S LITTLE BROTHER SAID HE WOULD DEFINITELY BUY THE TOY . Results In our CAD model we were able to successfully make the • crankshaft, which will drive the conveyor belt, rotate between the bearings. 7

  8. 4/4/2017 COST AND TIME ESTIMATES • T HE MODEL MATERIALS COST WAS $36.72 OR $14.40 PER MODEL . • T HE MATERIALS FOR 1000 UNITS WOULD COST $27,670 • W E WOULD ASK $120.00 FOR ONE TOY . • D ESIGNING THE TOY AND BUILDING THE TOY MODEL TOOK 41 MAN - HOURS OF WORK . M UCH OF THIS TIME WAS SPENT ON THE CAD DESIGN . 8

  9. 4/4/2017 SUMMARY • T HROUGH THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS , WE CREATED A TOY THAT CHALLENGES ITS USERS TO BUILD A PATH FOR A MARBLE TO REACH A CATCHER . • T HIS TOY ENABLES CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN CHILDREN AND FORCES THEM TO CONSTRUCT A MARBLE COASTER USING BUILDING SKILLS AND THEIR IMAGINATION . 9
