Kristen Crawford K-12 Science Supervisor The School District of the Chathams
Essential Intent of the Science Department The essential intent of the science department is to turn students' wonderings into exploration and experimentation to understand natural phenomena.
What’s new in Science? Next Generation Science Standards are coming Fall of 2017 New Science resources that blend literacy, hands-on exploration and have students “think” like a scientist. Modeling in the elementary classrooms Continued Professional development for teachers
The Next Generation Science Standards A group of 26 lead states participated in the development Representatives from elementary, secondary and high education. Many colleges and universities participated. Based on the National Research Council’s A Framework for K-12 Science Education Partners include, National Research Council's, National Science Teachers Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science and Achieve. Written for States by States
What is Three-Dimensional Learning? Crosscutting Concepts
What Are Science and Engineering Practices? What Scientists Do Practices are the behaviors that scientists engage in as they investigate and build models and theories about the natural world and the key set of engineering practices that engineers use as they design and build models and systems.
Scientific & Engineering Practices 1. Asking Questions (for science) and Defining Problems (for engineering) 2. Developing and Using Models 3. Planning and Carrying Out Investigations 4. Analyzing and Interpreting Data 5. Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking 6. Constructing Explanations (for science) and Designing Solutions (for engineering) 7. Engaging in Argument from Evidence 8. Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
What does that look like in the classroom?
What Are Crosscutting Concepts? How Scientists Think Crosscutting concepts are concepts that have application across all disciplines of science. As such, they provide a way of linking the different disciplines of science.
Crosscutting Concepts Cause and Effect Systems Structure and Function Patterns Energy and Matter Scale Stability and Change
What Are Disciplinary Core Ideas? What Scientists Know Disciplinary core ideas are the big ideas of science that provide scientists and engineers with the concepts and foundations to make sense of phenomena and/or design solutions to problems.

Denis Sheeran, K-12 Mathematics Supervisor The essential intent of the mathematics department is to develop students who can think critically and collaborate to solve problems creatively in preparation for an unexpected and ever changing world.
Washington Elementary School K-3 Current Changes/Updates EnVisionMATH still being implemented Pacing Guides were reviewed and updated this past summer Exemplars Differentiated Problem Solving tasks with rubrics, aligned to CCSS, Holistically scored as Novice, Apprentice, Practitioner, Expert.
2015-16 Goals Compilation and organization of shared problem solving resources. Professional Development on the use of Centers for math instruction, grades K-3 Professional Development on Number Talks and Open Middle Problems
Open Middle Problems Multiplying a Two-Digit Number by a Single-Digit Number Directions: Using the numbers 1 – 4, no more than one time each, make the largest possible product.
