  1. IAEM-USA 2015 STUDENT REGION ACADEMIC RESEARCH PRESENTATION COMPETITION RULES AND PREPARATION GUIDELINES The IAEM-USA Student Region, in cooperation with the IAEM-USA Awards Committee and sponsor Foundation for Comprehensive Emergency Management Research , is pleased to offer the Academic Research Presentation Competition. The IAEM-USA Student Region Academic Research Presentation Competition is an opportunity for students to showcase their research, and have it judged by experts in the field of emergency management. Presentations will be judged in either the Undergraduate or Graduate Level, and prizes awarded for first, second, and third place. Judging and awards will take place at the IAEM 2015 Annual Conference in Clark County, Nevada, and you must be present to compete. These award guidelines are posted at http://www.iaem.com/awards. Awards Eligibility This competition is open to IAEM-USA student members . Entries will be divided into two separate categories – one for Undergraduate students, and one for Graduate students. Number of Entries Only one entry per person is allowed. Awards Timeline Schedule for IAEM 2015 Award Categories (including Student Awards) :  Announcement of Call for Entries : Wednesday, April 1, 2015  Submission Deadline : [ APPLICABLE ONLY TO STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS] : August 1, 2015, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time . (Deadline for all other awards in all other categories is May 30, 2014.) Late submissions will not be accepted.  Submissions must be sent via email to Karen Thompson at Thompson@iaem.com.  Entrant MUST be present at the 2015 IAEM Annual Conference in Clark County, Nevada, to present and compete.

  2. Format of Abstract Submission Your abstract submission is your entry in this competition. Entries must be submitted via email in WORD format, subject line “IAEM -USA Poster Abstract” to Karen Thompson at Thompson@iaem.com, no later than August 1, 2014, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time . Abstract submissions must include: Heading : Title of abstract, names of presenter(s), affiliation, address, phone and fax numbers, and email address(es). Abstract and Title Length: Abstracts must be 150 words or less . The Chief Judge reserves the right to edit abstracts, if necessary, for clarity, grammar or proper usage. Abstracts above the 150-word limit will not be accepted. Titles of abstracts are limited to 10 words. Format of Presentation If your abstract submission is selected, you will be expected to bring to the conference the following : Two submissions required: In order to keep up with progressing technology and the interests of our members, presentations this year must include both an electronic presentation and a traditional poster. Students may use programs such as Animoto, Wikis, Windows Movie Maker or other media to create a presentation that will be shown on a laptop computer at the conference. Presentation Length: The electronic presentation must not exceed four (4) minutes; the presentation of the poster must not exceed four (4) minutes; and questions and answers with judges will not exceed two (2) minutes. Total presentation length: 10 minutes maximum. Citations required: All information, photos, and music shall be cited in APA format on the last screen of the electronic presentation. A copy of the citations must accompany the abstract. Poster Format: Not to exceed four (4) feet in height or four (4) feet in width. Presentation Theme: The presentation theme must relate to an aspect of emergency management. Presentation Content : The presentation must include: Short title of the presentation. Identification as either an undergraduate or graduate level presentation. Abstract. Student’s name(s). There may be no more than two students per presentation, and both must be at the graduate or undergraduate level (not a mix of each). Collaborators, Advisor(s), and Department(s). Funding Sources. Internal Review Board Proof of regulatory committee approval, if required. Objectives and significance of the research. Methods. Results, interpretation of results, conclusions, and directions for future research if the project is completed. Additional Presentation Rules : You must be present at the IAEM 2014 Annual Conference to participate. All presentations must run in the time allotted, and presenters must be present during the entire judging period, which will be published in the electronic conference program.

  3. The media or design of the presentation is at the creator’s discretion, within the guidelines set forth above. Laptop computers will be provided by IAEM. Presentations should be brought on either a flash drive or other similar media (CD, etc.). All presentations will be virus scanned before being uploaded, and any presentations that are corrupt will not be uploaded or judged. While the author may receive minor assistance, the presentation must be the student(s) original work and not that of others, including their professors. How Award Submissions Will Be Judged The purpose of the presentation is to convey to a wide audience the research project ’ s significance to scholars in the field and its potential significance to the general public. While all presentations will be publicly displayed for the length of the Annual Conference, judging will take place in private. Presentations will be judged on their quality in three areas : Content: ( 50% of score ) See sections G and H for what the presentation must include. Display: ( 30% of score ) The core of each presentation is a Web 2.0 driven display with text and graphics intended for a general audience and a poster with text and graphics intended for a general audience. The presentation should attract attention and convey important information about the project. Language should be simple and descriptions brief. Jargon should be avoided, and necessary technical terms should be defined. Spelling and grammar must be correct. Photographs, drawings, graphs, charts, figures, etc., should be simple and well organized. All text on computer screens should be in a minimum of 12 point type. If text is on a poster, it should be large enough to be readable from 4-6 feet away. Oral Description and Defense ( 20% of total score ): During the presentation judging, each student should be positioned with their presentation, prepared to answer questions, and elaborate upon their research and presentation format and style. The judges will evaluate the quality and accuracy of this discussion. Awards Structure: The award structure is as follows: Undergraduate Level : o First Place $225.00 o Second Place $175.00 o Third Place $100.00 Graduate Level : First Place $225.00 Second Place $175.00 Third Place $100.00 The Chief Judge reserves the right to alter monetary awards based on the number of submissions for each level.

  4. The Foundation for Comprehensive Emergency Management Research will also award a plaque to the first place winner in each category. Announcement of IAEM Award Results The results of the judging for the IAEM Student Region Academic Research Competition will be announced at a designated session during the IAEM Annual Conference in San Antonio. Consult the electronic conference program for details. Winners will receive prize checks in the mail following the conference. IAEM Headquarters staff will generate award certificates. An announcement of award winners wi l l be posted on the IAEM-Global Web site at www.iaem.com/Awards .
