The Energy mix and the transition to a carbon-free economy by 2050 EESC Brussels, January 31 2012 Eddie O’Connor President of Friends of the Supergrid and, CEO of Mainstream Renewable Power
Why the Supergrid • Carbon neutral Europe by 2050. • Single European electricity market. • Security and sustainability of supply. • Transformed energy system. • European technology to exploit and to export. • Skilled employment opportunities for the EU.
A group of companies with a mutual interest in promoting the policy agenda for a European Supergrid:
What is the Supergrid The Supergrid is a pan-European transmission network facilitating the integration of large-scale renewable energy and the balancing and transportation of electricity, with the aim of improving the European market.
EC Regulation proposal (October 2011) for the implementation of European infrastructure priorities • Necessary proposal for investments not done in the last 14 years Not the framework for a European Supergrid
From now to Phase 1 of Supergrid
Future policy and regulatory aspects needed • 2050 Supergrid design now: develop in phases • One operator in future: ISO • One grid code: Entso-e • One regulator: ACER • Ownership: TSOs and Investors • Technology: mainly HVDC
Supergrid technology: the “SuperNode” • The SuperNode links offshore wind parks to existing onshore networks or to points of consumption through a series of Supernodes located near clusters of offshore generation connected to load centres with HVDC VSC (Voltage Source Converter) multi-terminal international links • The concept is largely based on technology available today
