  1. THE DANIEL BAIRD FOUNDATION – CONTROL THE BLEED www.controlthebleed.org.uk

  2. DAN’S STORY • The Daniel Baird Foundation has been set up after our brother and son Daniel Baird of just 26 years of age was fatally stabbed in the early hours of 8th July 2017, outside The Forge Tavern, Digbeth in Birmingham following a night out with friends • There was no first aid or bleeding control kit available. Dan died shortly after arriving at hospital due to catastrophic bleeding • Dan’s Mother, Lynne Baird, would often lie awake and question why this tragedy happened and how it could have been prevented

  3. DAN’S STORY • Lynne researched online and found that blood loss trauma kits were readily available in America following a national campaign (Stop the Bleed) after the Sandy Hook School Shooting in 2012. • The core objective for the Daniel Baird Foundation is to: • Lobby MPs to raise awareness in Government and the General Public • Encourage Property Managers & Business Owners to keep accessible Bleed Control Kits on their premises • Campaign for all First Aid Training Courses to incorporate Catastrophic Bleed Control

  4. DAN’S STORY On creating the Daniel Baird Foundation, Lynne and Family have established relationships with organisations who want to support the charity and help to make a difference (Davenports, Blue Kit Medical, Unite the Union and West Midlands Ambulance Trust) “It is tragic that any person loses their life in such a senseless way. Supporting this campaign could assist our crews dramatically, by buying valuable minutes that could be the difference between a life saved or lost.” West Midlands Ambulance Trust Chief Executive, Anthony Marsh

  5. CONTROL THE BLEED • Control the Bleed is when a tourniquet is applied in an emergency or life-threatening situation to control/stop the bleeding. • Much like CPR training, “Control the Bleed” training provides any person with the ability to recognise life-threatening bleeding, intervene and possibly save a life.

  6. BLEED CONTROL KIT The Bleed Control Kit has been designed, so that anyone can use the equipment without the need for training. The bleed control kit includes a: • Permanent Marker Pen • Responder Gauze • Face Shield • Medical Tourniquet • Woundstop Bandage • Paramedic Scissors, and • Nitrile Gloves for infection control

  7. TAKE ACTION • A person can bleed to death in 5 minutes or less • You must react quickly to save a life

  8. CONTROL THE BLEED - ABC • Alert - Call 999 • Bleeding - Find the bleeding injury • Compress - Apply pressure to stop the bleeding But First…..

  9. IDENTIFY “LIFE-THREATENING BLEEDING” You will see: • Blood spurting out of the wound • Blood that wont stop pouring • Blood that is pooling on the ground • Major areas: neck, extremities and torso • Blood soaked clothing • Loss of a body part • Victim may become confused or unconscious

  10. LOOK FOR LIFE-THREATENING BLEEDING • Find the source of bleeding • Open or remove clothing to check for injuries • Look around your environment, what’s available to you i.e. cloth, t-shirt, clothes, belt, first aid kit

  11. HOW TO USE A TOURNIQUET • Wrap the tourniquet around the bleeding arm or leg about three inches above the bleeding site • Do not place the tourniquet onto a joint, go above the joint if necessary • Pull the free end of the tourniquet to make it as tight as possible • Twist or wind the windlass until bleeding stops • Secure the windlass to keep the tourniquet tight • Note the time the tourniquet was applied

  12. COMPRESSION AND CONTROL • Compression on a bleeding blood vessel will stop the bleeding • Apply continuous pressure with both hands directly on top of the bleeding wound • Push down as hard as you can • Hold pressure to stop bleeding, continue until medical professional arrives

  13. ENSURE YOUR SAFETY • Before you offer any help you must ensure your own safety • If you become injured you will not be able to help the victim • Make sure the area is safe for you to provide care • Protect yourself from blood-born infections by wearing gloves • Good handwashing after contact with people, blood and body fluids is key to prevent infection

  14. NO BLEED CONTROL KIT • Open the clothing over the bleeding wound • Wipe away any pooled blood • Pack (stuff) the wound with clean clothes like a t-shirt or whatever is available • Apply steady direct pressure with both hands directly on top of the wound

  15. STAY CALM • Reassure the person you are caring for them as much as possible • Don’t attempt to move the injured person until the tourniquet is applied and secured
