  1. HA 222 Fall 2016 - Presentation Criteria Myths & Legends The goal: To explore the continuing significance of Greco-Roman mythologies, legends and history in visual culture. Choose a myth or legend that was originated and/or significant in the classical Greek and/or Roman eras. Certain historical events will also suit our purpose. Your topic must be cleared with me to ensure that everyone chooses a different one (some overlap may be possible within very broad topics). Create a presentation that explores the subsequent life of the story, with a focus on how it is manifest in the painting and/or sculpture of subsequent periods. Elaborate on the way the story is depicted: What was the intended purpose? How does it fulfill its functional purpose? What about the style(s) employed? Why do you think it was chosen? Do you think it is suitable for the topic? Why or why not? What inspiration was the artist drawing on; i.e. how did the artist/patron know about the story? why did it resonate for them? What does it say about them (and their society/culture)? Why does the image appeal to your understanding of its origins and/or its use in this situation? What does it say about you (and your society/culture)? (ie. the presentation must be theorized as well as descriptive). The assignment is not intended to require extensive research, but any sources that you do use must be acknowledged with full citations. I am open to a variety of formats & approaches. Just clear them with me first! All criteria on the course outline also apply.

  2. The criteria: Sent to me and presented in class: • it is offered to the class in a 8-10 minute powerpoint (or equivalent - check with me) presentation (note wireless access can be intermittent, Prezi at your own risk) • powerpoint is accompanied by a digital submission (Word document) of your notes and your bibliography. I highly recommend that you script (write, rehearse & time it). Components: • carefully selected images • reflection on the artistic/patronage process of selection and creation • rationale for the artistic developments (choices and significance) • it shows an understanding of the connections between ideology, theory and practice in the use of classical materials.

  3. The schedule: November 7, 2016 - our one class the week of Reading Break is cancelled, to give you more time to work on this assignment. I will be in my office during our class time and available for consultation. November 14, 2016 at 3:30PM - All topics must be approved by me, in person, before this time. November 17, 2016 at 3:30PM - We will draw for presentation order that day. I will stop responding to questions about structure, formatting, topics etc. at the end of class (I am travelling and unlikely to be available for last minute questions over the weekend) November 21, 2016 by 1:30PM - ALL presentations (powerpoints) and scripts (word docs) are due to me as email attachments - this is regardless of which day your presentation is on. (Dropbox or on USB key are also possible, but send me an email telling me how you are delivering your materials) November 21, 23, 24, 28, & 30, 2016 class time - presentations will be given according to the schedule drawn on November 17; you must be present to do the presentation analyses (requirements will be given separately)

  4. Evaluation Breakdown (40%): 5% - standing up & doing it 5% - punctuality/scheduling/timing 30% - presentation style: clarity, delivery; technical issues - content: topic cleared and focussed, appropriate selection, no obvious factual errors, main sources employed - relevance of argument: thesis, focus, progressive argument - presentation structure: presentation of argument, avoids simple description, provides progressive argument - importance of question: supporting evidence & application of supporting evidence - relevance of material: offers & supports reasons why the knowledge presented has significance - independent expression of ideas: originality, connects concepts with experience and understanding - critical thought: demonstrates a consideration of the issues and counter-arguments associated with the material
