Teaching with Online Platforms
What is an Online Learning Platform? A n Online Learning Platform is typically a website used by educational institutions as a tool or primary environment for learning. It can serve many functions, such as being a place to submit classwork, display class notes, syllabi, and other related information, as well as host quizzes, lectures, and education-related applications. This presentation will focus on the University of Arizona’s most used platform: Desire 2 Learn (D2L).
Examples of Online Platforms
What Can D2L Do? D2L is accessible from any web browser. ● One-stop place to access material, class lists, and ● announcements from all your courses. Host class discussion boards. ● Built-in Quiz and Test support. ● Integrates Dropbox, online cloud storage that can be used ● to upload and download files and documents between students and teachers. No more “dog ate my homework”.
Advantages Convenience - allows students to carefully manage the ● pace of their own learning experience. Allows room for interactions with classmates through ● discussion boards, class chat rooms, and e-mail. Online learning platforms provide 24/7 accessibility to ● course materials Facilitates learning without having to organize when and ● where everyone interested in a course must be present.
Disadvantages Though e-learning offers ease, flexibility and the ability to ● remotely access a classroom in the students own time, it allows room for isolation. Internet, server glitches and scheduled maintenances can ● sometimes become a problem for both parties. Although it is user friendly, it can be a problem for users ● with fair knowledge in computers to get a grasp of all the functions are the correct use of this platform.
Why is D2L Important? Most of the time, student-teacher interaction is very ● limited due to different factors such as a large quantity of students or one professor giving various class sections. D2L serves as a medium for easiness for homeworks, ● announcements, grades and communication. Online submissions make the detection of plagiarism easy- ● making it harder for students to cheat
Future of Online Platforms Websites such as D2L ● will continue to evolve and change the way we teach Eventually classwork and ● homework will be completely electronic These sites allow for ● online colleges and high schools that don’t require any face-to-face meeting
