Analysing and evaluating sources 3 Steps
3 Steps We will need to find out the following information about each source we look at: 1. Origin 2. Context 3. Purpose
Origin • What type of source is it and who wrote it? • When was it written? • Is it complete?
Context • What is happening elsewhere at the time? Most important in my opinion!
What is Propaganda? • Misleading information used to promote a particular point of view • It is used to influence the opinion or decision of a group of people with regards to a particular subject, object, cause or issue
What is Biased and/or perspective? “Being biased means having an unbalanced or one-sided opinion” (Textbook, p.447) Ask yourself whose point of view is the source espousing?
Main causes of WW1 • The Alliance system • Imperialism • Militarism • Nationalism Definitions are provided in your textbook and Nationalism and Imperialism are the most important two for Australia
Why did Australians enlist? • The great adventure • Earn a decent income • Loyalty to Britain • Propaganda (racial hatred)
Conscription • Conscription = compulsory military service • Referendum = national vote • Plebiscite = public opinion poll (not legally binding) • First plebiscite October 1916 defeated • Second plebiscite 1917 defeated • Propaganda campaign vote yes and vote no
For Conscription • Middle and upper class people loyal to Britain • The Liberal Party opposition • The national press (the Bulletin) • The Anglican Church • The returned soldiers federation
Against Conscription • Working class people and trade unionists • Labor Party and voters • Influential leaders of the Catholic Church (Irish) • Women’s groups (women’s peace army)
