  9. Learning new words • 6 year olds can have a vocabulary of 14,000 words which helps them learn at school • C hildren between 18 months and 6 yrs have to learn 8 new words a day

Fir irst la language not Engli lish • Bilingualism should be celebrated. • Parents should speak their mother tongue at home. • If children know their first language well it will help them learn English. • It is normal for children to ‘jumble’ words from different languages. • There is no evidence that bilingualism will make it harder for children to develop speech.
