Why? Population Projection Source: Sunshine Coast Council (2019) • Addressing issues of social isolation and loneliness related to ageing • Focus on a part of life that needs our compassion right now • High proportion of elderly persons in Caloundra-Kings Beach (27.7%) and Golden Beach-Pelican Waters (27.4%) within the Sunshine Coast LGA • Stakeholders noted an unmet need in the ageing community, in terms of respite care, and dementia care. • 6,512 elderly individuals are living alone • The Sunshine Coast population is growing rapidly when measured against other regions. It is anticipated that the Sunshine Coast population will grow by approximately 200,000 individuals to about 518,000 by 2041. • The Coasts population is ageing with a significant increase in individuals aged 65 years or older. About 1 in 4 persons will be 65 years or older by 2041. (Source: Sunshine Coast Council 2018)
Cliff Analogy Dr Libby Sallnow (UK) ... • Our population is changing • Demands being placed on services for earlier and wider access • Increasing recognition of the importance of social factors Crisis work – have fallen off the cliff (Hospital Emergency Department) • Early Intervention work (build a fence at the top of the cliff) • Prevention work (works to build strong and robust communities, where neighbours care for and about others in their communities). • Working with what’s strong rather than what’s wrong • Build community capacity • Advocacy – to all levels of government Importantly, funding is not reaching communities
