Current Program Elementary: First year of strongly suggested model Excerpt from summer reading letter: Assignment upon return to school. Feedback: Mixed
Current Program Middle School: Third year of required summer reading assignment. Requirement: 2 books- one fiction, one non-fiction. Written assignment required over the summer, and an in-class assignment during September.
Current Program High School: Required reading assignment for select AP classes. AP U.S. AP Chemistry AP Biology AP Language (English 11) College English (12) AP Literature (12)
Moving Forward ELEMENTARY: Model will move from “strongly suggested” to required. Students will be required to read 1-2 books over the summer (younger students can read with parents) Each grade level will determine an age-appropriate assignment that will be required upon return to school MIDDLE SCHOOL: Continuation of Books at the Beach program HIGH SCHOOL: English curriculum committee for grades 9 and 10 will review the benefits of a required summer reading assignment for all students. Currently reviewing possible incentivized reading program.
