MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR FURTHER EDUCATION Level 8 – Honours Degrees • - 3/4 years study - Min. of 2 H5 and 4 O6/H7 (TCD & a small no. of level 8 courses Min 3 H5 and 3 O6/H7) • Level 7 – Ordinary Degrees -3 years study -Min. 5 O6/H7 • Level 6 – Higher Certificate - 2 years study -Min 5 O6/H7 • Post Leaving Certificate Courses - 1 year study - Min. 5 passes in H/O/F

  5. Choosing Subjects  Choosing 5 th year subjects requires R esearch, R eflection and D ecision.  Students need to consider the following:  Ability/Interests  Careers  Relevance  Keeping options open  Seek advice

  6. ◦ Choose subjects you have enjoyed to date and that you do well in ◦ Never pick subjects that your friends are doing – be true to yourself and your interests ◦ Subject choice should not depend on what teacher is teaching a certain subject at Leaving Cert Level.

  7. How many subjects? ◦ Students will be required to take 7 subjects . ◦ The results from their best 6 subjects will be totaled to give them a maximum of 625 points. (This includes the 25 bonus points awarded for Honours Maths) ◦ Students are required to take: ◦ Irish ◦ English ◦ Maths ◦ A third Language is strongly recommended….. Why?

  8. Irish ◦ H4 in Irish is required for the following courses: ◦ Primary Teaching ◦ Irish – Early and Modern (TCD) ◦ Home Economics and Irish Second Level Teaching (St. Angela’s) ◦ Commerce and Irish (UCD) ◦ Commerce and Irish (UCC) ◦ Gno agus Cumarsaid (NUIG)

  9. NUI Colleges that have a third language requirement ◦ NUIG ◦ UCC ◦ NUI Maynooth ◦ UCD ◦ Shannon College of Hotel Management ◦ St. Angela’s College Sligo ◦ RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons Ireland)

  10. 3 rd Language ◦ There are currently 171 Courses that require a third language. ◦ There are however over 1300 Courses that do not require a third language. ◦ Many of the science, engineering and nursing courses in the NUI Colleges have removed the third language requirement – however it is still a requirement for Medicine and Pharmacy and the Health Sciences such as Occupational Therapy. ◦ If a student has an exemption from a third language e.g. dyslexia and a report then the exemption carries over once the college has been informed. ◦ Advise you to look at the following website to check out in greater detail.

No third language requirement: ◦ Entry to TCD, UL or DCU apart from specific courses which may have a language component e.g. Business and Language UL or European Studies UL or Applied Languages UCD. ◦ It is not required for entry to Institutes of Technology or DIT unless it is part of the area of study. ◦ Gardai, Nursing, Apprenticeships. ◦ Most PLC Courses.

  18. Creative Skills : If you enjoy reading, writing, story telling etc. – English, History. Mathematical Skills – Good at logical thinking, puzzles and numbers – HL Maths, Physics, Accounting. Scientific Skills – Enjoy analysing information and are good at memorising information – Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Agricultural Science, Geography. Practical Skills – Enjoy making things, doing things, knowing how things work – Home Economics, Design & Communication Graphics.

  19. Language Skills – Easily grasp languages and enjoy learning about different cultures – Irish, French, German. Social Skills – Enjoy learning about society past and present and the world around you – History, Home Economics. Business Studies – Enjoy learning about business, money and the economy – Business, Accounting. Artistic Skills – Talented in the arts, enjoy performing and/or using your creativity – Art, Music, Design & Communication Graphics.

  20. Essential Subjects There are some myths about the necessity of having certain subjects for certain careers. Contrary to popular belief:- Engineer / Architect : You do NOT need Technical Drawing Accountant : You do NOT need Business or Accounting

  24. For your sixth and seventh subjects it is your chance to choose subjects that you will enjoy studying. You will be required to acquire points to gain entry and to make this possible and achievable choose subjects that you enjoy and that you find interesting.
