Comments about Inclusion Network • “ I had no knowledge that there was an Inclusion Network in Alexandria. I'm somewhat surprised that Alexandria has partnered with this Network because a majority of the population is Caucasian. However, it would be wonderful to see Alexandria become more diverse and open to other cultures, ethnicities, religions and genders. Alexandria has been mostly conservative for many decades and there needs to a great educational push to open the minds of Alexandria community members. There also needs to be a educational push to clear up misconceptions of important issues regarding immigration, human rights, and health care.” • “ It's not that those in Alex aren't for diversity, it's just that we aren't exposed to it. Also, the younger residents are more acceptable of diverse people due to exposure to people who differ from them on social media, popular movies, and YouTube. It's easier to be acceptable of other types of people when you get to know someone who is different then you.” – This was mentioned in the focus group
Recommendations • Recommended media outlets to advertise on: – Radio – Social Media • Recommended events: – Cultural Fair – Presentations about someone’s personal experience – Conversations about race and racism • More social media activity – Posting recipes of the week or video interviews with someone
Final Thoughts and Conclusion • More educated and a larger percentage with a higher income • Better understanding of diversity and are open to learning more • Of the people who want to learn more – medium to reach them were indicated • any advertising should include people from other ethnicity where it becomes the norm • Most want more diversity training in the community and place of work • diversity training should be done in schools and businesses • There is still the perception and foreigners would be ignored, talked about poorly or residents would just move away
Final Thoughts and Conclusion • Respondents appear to be more open to diversity groups 2008 (40%) “would ignore today” only 20% (contradict previous statement) • 60% think residents would avoid foreigners, be uncomfortable because they are not accustomed to and have predetermined judgement
