  2. • Academic Skill Deficits • Study Skills Deficits • Classroom Engagement • Student Motivation What are your • Peer-to-Peer and Group Learning students’ • …. needs? Can we leverage research in learning design, pedagogy, and MyLab technology to help bridge these divides…without a lot of additional work or cost on our part? Absolutely!!!

  10. Student Notebooks/Workbooks sometimes they are called learning guides or guided notebooks as well

  11. Video Notebook The Video Organizer encourages students to take notes and work practice exercises while watching Elayn Martin- Gay’s lecture series. ○ All content in the Video Organizer is presented in the same order as it is presented in the videos. ○ The Video Organizer provides ample space for students to write down key definitions and rules throughout the lectures, and “Play” and “Pause” button icons prompt students to follow along with Elayn for some exercises while they try others on their own. Click here to see a sample of a video organizer

  12. Activity Notebooks Key Concept and Activity Lab Workbook is a great way to engage students in conceptual projects and exploration, as well as group work. The Workbook includes Extension Exercises, Exploration Activities, Conceptual Exercises, and Group Activities.

  19. Memory & Learning Theory : Practical Applications to the Classroom

  20. Memory Why is it so critical, and how can we help our students? If we perceive sensory information as meaningful, working memory starts to process it. We make sense of what we are processing based on what we already know. However, working memory is limited in how much it can process and how long it can hold it. How can we build accurate schema for long- term memory? Click here for just one of many sites offering free, easy-to-use graphics organizers for your students to organize their ideas. Students can use them in retrieval activities and study groups, too. Also consider sharing the Cornell Note-Taking Method with your students.

  21. Moving material from working memory to long-term memory requires encoding. Visual input (images) Memory Auditory input (sounds) Semantic input (meanings) Most encoding is semantic…which means you store information along with context.

  22. What else can we learn from all the research in cognition, learning, and teaching? What if you could raise students’ grades from a C to a B or an A? The solution isn’t technology. It’s not more money. It’s not more class time. Curious? • When we think about learning, we typically focus on getting information into students’ heads. What if, instead, we focus on getting information out of students’ heads? “Retrieval practice” is a learning strategy where we focus on getting information out. Through the act of retrieval, or calling information to mind, our memory for that information is strengthened and forgetting is less likely to occur. Learn more here!

  23. Retrieval practice & peer-to-peer learning • Put away your class materials, and write or sketch everything you know. Be as thorough as possible. • Then, check your class materials for accuracy and important points you missed. Swap with a colleague and annotate each other’s notes. • If you don’t have ready -made tests, try making your own and trading with a friend who has done the same. Retrieval Practice Produces More Learning than Elaborative Studying with Concept Mapping

  24. The Learning Scientists: Strategies Read articles on their blog, like one about GRIT and mindset!

  25. Recent research! Note-taking by hand is more beneficial than using annotated slides “A brand -new series of experiments by Coria and Higham (1)(2) looked into the differences between longhand note-taking and slide annotations on student performance and has revealed intriguing findings. This research is so new, it is not even published yet, but their findings were presented at the most recent Psychonomics meeting in Amsterdam in May and are extremely relevant for teaching and learning practice.” – Learning Scientists Blog June 2018

  26. Accessibility Reminder Keep in mind that for some learners, not having those annotated slides could be challenging (for example, a student with dyslexia). You may want to consider using a partial outline or partial PPT slides and then adding more material after you’ve shared a file for them to print.

  27. It’s not just for faculty, either! The Learning Scientists maintain a student site as well!

  30. Engage your Students

  31. Learning Catalytics Learning Catalytics™ helps instructors generate class discussion, guide their lectures, and promote peer- to-peer learning with real- time analytics. Now available through MyLab Math, Learning Catalytics is an interactive student response tool that uses students’ smartphones, tablets, or laptops to engage them in more sophisticated tasks and thinking.

  32. Cooperative Activities Internet-based Chapter Projects, with assignable exercises in MyLab Math, enable students to learn by doing and have fun in the process. By exploring and considering a variety of carefully guided “what - if” scenarios, they will develop a better understanding of Challenge Problems now appear in most Exercise sets at the concepts presented in the end of Applications and Extensions. Challenge the section. Problems are thought-provoking and require some ingenuity to solve. They can be used for group work or to challenge students.

  33. Aida Aida Aida™ Calculus is the first tutoring app that gives feedback on your steps and guides you to the solution through personalized hints, videos, and examples. Go beyond the final answer and really understand how to solve the problem. Learn more about Aida 34
