Student Multimedia Presentation and Professional Development Facility School of Communication Contact: Ulla Sypher 1) Project Description Communication skills are among the most sought after in today’s workplace. Graduates with the ability to critically analyze various forms of data and evidence, synthesize ideas, present information in a persuasive and provocative manner, and actively listen to feedback will be prepared for some of the most promising careers today. Undoubtedly, though, the 21 st century careers of tomorrow will require all of these skills, plus the ability to leverage those skills using state-of-the-art multimedia information and communication technologies. The College of Communication and Information (CCI) has a rich history of cultivating and developing these skills in our graduates. However, we lack the requisite facilities where students at all levels of our curriculum can practice and see others practice these skills. To meet this need, we are requesting equipment to convert an existing space in the College of Communication and Information into a state-of-the-art multimedia presentation and professional development facility. This request is part of a larger plan to create innovative learning spaces for all students on the fourth floor of UCC, repurposing existing spaces to increase benefits to students. The strategic plan also includes the creation of the Social Justice Lab that is described in a separate proposal. 2) Impact on Instruction This facility will provide students at all levels of instruction with a dedicated, fully equipped space for the practice and delivery of professional presentations. We envision the facility potentially hosting a wide variety of events involving students and faculty in every corner of our School, like the Advertising Club’s practice campaign presentation before going to national competition, the Debate Team’s pre- tournament practice rounds, Garnet and Gold Scholars research presentations, the Hispanic Marketing Center’s Advisory Board meetings, the School’s ongoing Graduate Research Colloquium Series, professional development seminars on topics such as developing e-portfolios, creating a CV, and practicing ethics in the workplace, mock academic conference presentations, web conferencing between students and scholars around the world, Honors in the Major /Master’s thesis and PhD dissertation defenses (with the ability for committee members to join at a distance via technology), and many more. Some of these efforts also involve students outside the Communication majors, broadening the access base to the facility. A more formalized Student Professional Development Series is being considered in the School of Communication; these facilities would be the perfect location for such events. Furthermore, all presentations will be supported by the latest multimedia presentation software, available in the facility and to the students. 4100 University Center, Building C, The Florida State University, P.O. We also envision the facility being equipped with the capacity to digitally record and share all presentations, which will enable faculty and peers to offer feedback and suggestions asynchronously and will permit the online posting of certain events for global distribution through the CCI website. Additionally, the facilities could be used for class-related group and individual projects, in-depth interviews, focus groups, and other student activities. All communication undergraduate majors and graduate students will have access to the facilities through a scheduling-request system (to maintain the highest quality service and maintenance of the equipment and facilities), which could ultimately permit 24-hour availability. The space designated for the Student Multimedia Presentation and Professional Development Facility is located in the eastern part of the fourth floor hallway, located behind an existing card-swipe protected door. 3) Number of Students Affected The annual number of students affected by this effort adds up to approximately 1,220 – 1,500 and includes: 600 students in the four undergraduate majors in communication 180 students in the two master’s and the doctoral programs in communication 440 students taking appropriate courses within lower-division communication offerings Non-majors participating in Communication clubs and events 4) Project Plan The Student Multimedia Presentation and Professional Development Facility will be located on the eastern end of the fourth floor of University Center C providing easy access to all students in the unit. The space is located just down the hall and around the corner from the College undergraduate advising and the Dean’s office and is, thus, conveniently located and familiar to students in the major. If both proposals are approved, this facility will also be close to the Social Justice Lab, allowing easy movement between the two if break-out sessions are needed. The designated space is behind a card-swipe protected set of double doors, making it secure and ultimately accessible for scheduled students after regular business hours. One of the CCI ’s facility technicians has his office just around the corner and is thus nearby during business hours should technical trouble-shooting be required. In addition, the CCI HelpDesk is able to provide RemoteSupport during the following hours: Telephone & Walk-In Support Schedule* Monday 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM Tuesday 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM Wednesday 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM Thursday 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM Sunday 1:00 PM – 10:00 PM * The CCI Help desk 4100 University Center, Building C, The Florida State University, P.O. The facilities will be equipped with a workstation, projection system and immersive audio system capable of displaying rich multimedia content. Access to RemoteApps, a previously Tech Fee-funded improvement will be configured by the CCI HelpDesk and CCI technology staff. Support will also be provided in-house by CCI. 5) Maintenance and Support Ongoing maintenance and t echnology support will be provided by the CCI’s HelpDesk staff and technology specialists. Unforeseen costs will be paid from the regular College E&G funds. 6) Project Team Frank Hart, Staff, College of Communication & Information – Network and Facilities Management (located directly across from the planned lab space) Jason Penley, Manager, CCI HelpDesk CCI HelpDesk student-based staff 4100 University Center, Building C, The Florida State University, P.O.
