  1. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Clinicians Involved in Healthcare Design: Strategies, Resources, and Research Presenter: Kay Rademacher, MSA, RN, NEA-BC, EDAC www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  2. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research 2018 Roundtable Presentation by: Joyce Durham, RN Kay Rademacher, RN 2019 NIHD Past-President 2019 NIHD President www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  3. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Learning Objectives Ø Learn how professionals with clinical backgrounds have become involved in healthcare design and the components of their roles. Ø Compare successful strategies utilized to involve clinicians and the clinical voice in the design process. Ø Share resources that have been helpful to clinicians in the healthcare planning, design, or construction process. www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  4. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Roundtable Participants Ø 11 Clinicians Ø 8 Architects/Project Management Ø 5 Vendors www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  5. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Roundtable Participant Questions Ø Successful strategies utilized to involve clinicians and the clinical voice in the design process. Ø Resources that have been helpful to clinicians in the healthcare planning, design, or construction process. Ø Research studies that are needed to address key clinical issues in healthcare design www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  6. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Successful Strategies Utilized to Involve Clinicians and the Clinical Voice in the Design Process. Ø Design professionals need to educate clients; they like to see things written down; “we like to be educated but don’t drive our ideas down” Ø An architect commented that architects typically use plans and elevations to communicate; but clinicians don’t think that way; has realized the importance of mock-ups and virtual reality www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  7. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Successful Strategies Utilized to Involve Clinicians and the Clinical Voice in the Design Process. Ø Vocabulary is important; clinicians are smart people but many architectural terms are not familiar; there needs to be a glossary of terms or “cheat sheet” before beginning the design process Ø They have many ideas and don’t want to hear “you can’t do that” Ø A clinician commented that VR is a good way to engage clinicians www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  8. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Successful Strategies – YOUR RESPONSES Utilized to Involve Clinicians and the Clinical Voice in the Design Process. Ø Design with empathy. As if you were the patient or the family member Ø Digital platforms that they can access and reference from Ø Access to qualified planning and design professionals who understand clinical requirements, trends, technology, language www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  9. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Successful Strategies – YOUR RESPONSES Utilized to Involve Clinicians and the Clinical Voice in the Design Process. Ø As a clinician, it seems there are minimal resources, and we would love more involvement in the design Ø Educating the clinicians on the various design aspects instead of showing floorplans and asking them to comment Ø Full scale mockups, site visits of other facilities, peer to peer discussions to facilitate change www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  10. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Helpful Resources Clinicians in Healthcare Planning, Design, or Construction Process Ø The importance of starting with a functional program was emphasized; “it tells the architect how clinicians do their work” and how the space should respond. Ø “Nurses care about the things they touch every day” Ø A clinician recommended that a good way to get clinicians involved is to ask them to show you how they work; ask “what are the difficult times of the day?”; an architect responded that they find shadowing clinicians for as little as 30 minutes helps with this. www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  11. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Helpful Resources Clinicians in Healthcare Planning, Design, or Construction Process Ø In order for clinicians to be involved, time needs to be carved out for their participation; dinner meeting and Saturday morning sessions work well. Ø Clients do not want to hear about best practices that don’t apply to them; “the Cleveland Clinic is not relevant to a rural hospital”; want to hear about best practices relevant to their facility. Ø It was suggested that new technology be installed on existing units so nurses and other staff can become familiar with it prior to the move to a new facility. www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  12. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Helpful Resources Clinicians in Healthcare Planning, Design, or Construction Process Ø One clinician noted that there is more to the process than budgets and deadlines; clinicians want LEAN designs. www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  13. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Research Needed Addressing Clinical Issues in Healthcare Design Ø Outcomes need to be rated; a finding of an outcome needs to be rated as to its level of importance Ø A future theme will be virtual care Ø Research: who is responsible for it? Ø Need to conduct small pilots and be more multidisciplinary Ø Need more POE’s to demonstrate real learning www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  14. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Research Needed – YOUR RESPONSES Addressing Clinical Issues in Healthcare Design Ø Infection rates in design spaces (is med prep by the sink?), fall rates, family satisfaction with rooming in, etc. Ø Operational outcomes Ø Design outcomes and nurse/patient satisfaction with the space decisions Ø Ergonomics and point of use www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.

  15. CLINICIANS INVOLVED IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN: Strategies, Resources, and Research Advice– YOUR RESPONSES For Clinicians Expressing Interest in Healthcare Design Ø Research and speak with nurses that have done role. Ø Team up with experienced and interested architects. Ø Partner with a designer on a few projects to collaborate knowledge and expertise until you become autonomous. Ø Look into programs that support the design aspects of the hospital setting. Visit other hospitals and clinics. Ø Study, study, study! There are tons of resources out there. www.nursingihd.com Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and inter-professional leadership.
