Philadelphia’s Urban Forest Today • 2.9 million trees total • 20% canopy cover across the city • 118,000 street trees • 10,500 acres of park land – 5,600 acres of natural forested lands • Residential land use has the most tree canopy and the greatest potential for more tree canopy
2019 Urban Tree Canopy Assessment 20% of Philadelphia is covered by tree canopy 2009 Greenworks Philadelphia goal: 30% in every neighborhood

Scope of Work summary Phase One – Workplan and Information Gathering Task 1: Project Kickoff meeting • Task 2: Existing Conditions and Research, Review and Synthesis • ➢ City provides: Existing conditions report ⁻ Tree canopy assessments and data ⁻ Policy review ⁻ GIS layers ⁻ Other relevant reports, manuals, guidelines, data, and research ⁻ Develop management units in partnership with Project Team (for ➢ management recommendations and canopy goal setting)
Scope of Work summary Phase Two – Stakeholder and Community Engagement • Task 3: Design and Implement a Stakeholder Engagement Plan ➢ If we are successful, we will have: Made participation accessible for residents in priority neighborhoods ⁻ (through strategic meeting times and locations, childcare, compensation, etc) Gathered input on a citywide scale with an engaging campaign ⁻ Engaged the Steering Committee in a meaningful way ⁻ Created a foundation for future involvement and collaboration with ⁻ specialty groups (real estate, utilities, youth, tree care industry, etc) Gathered information on barriers to participation in street tree and ⁻ yard tree planting programs (structural, informational, perceived)
Scope of Work summary Phase Three – Plan Development Task 4: Data Analysis for Goal Setting and Prioritization • Recommend unique canopy goal for each management unit ➢ ➢ Develop prioritization map for street tree planting in the city Identify neighborhoods or smaller geographic units as high and low priority ⁻ for new street tree plantings Task 5: Develop Recommendations • ➢ For planting and stewardship by management unit including street trees ⁻ ➢ Policy Funding ➢ Communication and Education ➢ ➢ Staff Needs
