2 FEBRUARY 2020 REFLECTION “When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took (Jesus) up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord” (Lk 2:22). The Torah required that every woman who gave birth should, forty days afterward, make a pilgrimage to the temple in Jerusalem for purification. This does not mean that the law considered sex or womanhood or childbirth to be dirty or sinful. Just as a Jewish priest had to purify the holy vessels every time they were used in the Temple liturgy, so a woman who gave birth also had to be purified following the holy use of her sacred body in giving birth to a new child. Thus, Mary had to be purified. Moreove r, the Law required that a woman’s “first - born” must accompany her and be redeemed like an unclean animal. “Every firstling of an ass you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every first-born of man among your sons you shall redeem” (Exodus 13:13). Jesus needed to be redeemed. However, St. Luke purposely does not say that Jesus needed to be redeemed but presented. The Law required that Jesus be redeemed not presented or dedicated. St. Luke’s quotation conce rning the first-born (Luke 2:23) is based not on the law concerning redemption (Exodus 13:13) but rather Exodus 13:1-2, which deals with the consecration of the first-born to the Lord: “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Consecrate to me all the first-born; whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine.’” St. Luke records no redemption ritual being performed for Jesus. Jesus was not ransomed and this was not at all normal. St. Luke, in other words, was portraying Jesus as a holy first-born Israelite with a natural priestly status. Just like Hannah of the Old Testament who gave birth to Samuel (see 1 Samuel 1- DYNAMIC WOMEN OF FAITH 2), and dedicated him to God’s service in the temple for Registration is now open . as long as he lives, so Jesus in like manner was When - Saturday, March 28 – 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m . dedicated to God and was not redeemed.
