  3. History of Automotive Industry • Carl Benz developed internal combustion engine using petro-fuel in 1886. • But automotive industry was well developed in the United States when Henry Ford introduced his Ford Model T in 1913 at $ 825 per car. • Henry Ford would like his Ford Model T becoming the main transportation of American people with price that people could buy. • He developed “Assembly Production L ine” to replace making car by few skillful persons. • His Ford Model T had one model in black color. With mass production, Ford Model T was sold at $ 850 in 1913 and price came down to $360 in 1916. Copy Right  Innovation Group Confidential

  4. History of Automotive Indu stry • With expanding of high way in US and affordable price, Ford Model T became the transportation of American people with total sales of 15 million cars a year in 1938. Before WWII, Ford had over 60% market share in US market and US cars shared 90% of world wide production. • After WW II, income of American people increased and their demand changed. Only one black color of Ford Model T did not serve their needs. • Alfred Sloan of General Motors who developed modern business management concept by using strategic planning, production and product designing in building his business success. GM introduced Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac in different prices to serve the requirements of American. Copy Right  Innovation Group Confidential

  5. History of Automotive Indus try • GM became leader in automotive industry since 1940 ’s. GM was the car leader for 40 years • In 1970 ’s, while Mercedes -Benz and BMW were developing the performance of car engines. Japanese cars improved their quality and fuel saving ,Japanese cars were able to penetrate US market with cheaper price, better product quality/ durability and lower fuel consumption. • Sales of Japanese cars gradually increased in the expenses of Big 3 in USA • GM went to chapter 11 during US economic crisis and lost the position to Toyota in 2009. • China is the largest car producer at 19 million cars per year. 6. Automotive Industry After 2009 • US crisis changed the face of automotive industry. • GM and Chrysler went bankrupt and went into Chapter 11 and received$ billions from the Presidents . • In 2009,Toyota became No 1 car producers with Volkswagen coming up as No 2. • In 2011, GM came back strongly and regained the title as the leader in the market, followed by Toyota and Volkswagen. • Volkswagen and GM are competition in 19 million car-market in China • Thailand became one of the strategic countries in car production, 2.4 million cars were produce in 2012. But production dropped down to 1.9 million cars in 2014. • Indonesia ,Mexico and India are increasing their car productions Copy Right  Innovation Group Confidential

  7. Cars in future What kind of passenger cars that you expect to see on the street in 2020? Copy Right  Innovation Group Confidential

  8. Consumers’ requirements • Diversity • Comfort in driving • Low CO2 emission • Powerful engine • Economic • Safety • Driving assistance Copy Right  Innovation Group Confidential

  9. Cars in Future in Europe • BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz (and Toyota-Lexus) are driven on diversity and comfort in driving. • BMW and Audi are rated as the best performance cars • CO 2 emission will be set at 95 g.CO 2 /km in 2015 from current 120 g.CO 2 /km . • This requires better performance of engines with low fuel consumption • With the development of turbocharger and supercharger, diesel-engine cars occupied 50% of European cars . • Temperature inside the engine compartment increases up to130*C • Hybrid cars ,electrical cars and urban cars will gain more demand • Self-driving cars are in the pipe line • By 2020, the high-performance car: urban cars: electrical/hybrid cars will be the proportion of 35:30:30 Copy Right  Innovation Group Confidential

  10. US Market • Gasoline engines are still dominating US market • In environmental control, US sets car regulation, consuming fuel not less than 55 miles/ gallon for year 2025 versus current regulation of 27 miles /gallon • Gasoline engines are expected to decrease from 83 % market share to 68% in next 10 years. • Diesel cars will grow from 3 % to 9 % . • Electrical cars and hybrid cars will grow fast in US. This depends on how fast battery technology and total supply-chain of electrical car can be developed. • Because of Shale Gas production, NPG will be consumed more. Expect 700,000 units of buses and trucks in US will use NPG in next 10 years Copy Right  Innovation Group Confidential

  11. What are necessary to develop to meet gas/ CO 2 emission and low fuel consumption requirements in next 10 years? • Higher performance engines with low fuel consumption • Either diesel or gasoline or NPG engines • Higher performance materials and lighter weight materials will be used. • Need clean exhaust gas engines • Low gas permeability fuel hoses are needed. • Electrical/Hybrid cars/F-cell cars/urban cars will be seen more on the street. • Green tires are set as regulations • Recyclable materials are required. 12. Materials for High Performance Cars • Super Strength Steel in car body to reduce weight. • Fiber-composite plastic to replace metal parts • Fiber re-enforced rubber for high performance and heavy duty rubber parts. • FKM/Silicon for bio-fuel hose to replace conventional fuel hose. • ACM/ECM/HNBR are consuming more in the areas of high temperature and aggressive exhaust gas such as thermo-charger intake hoses. • Rubber in automotive parts has to service wider range of temperature from -40* C to 170 *C • TPE/TPO will be using more in ECO and electrical cars • TPV will replace thermoset-rubber in some areas.
