¡ Slide ¡ 1 ¡ – ¡ My ¡ name ¡ is ¡ Cyrus ¡ Harris ¡ I ¡ am ¡ the ¡ Natural ¡ Resource ¡ Advocate ¡ for ¡ Maniilaq ¡ Association ¡ I ¡ am ¡ also ¡ a ¡ member ¡ of ¡ the ¡ Native ¡ Village ¡ of ¡ Kotzebue ¡ Tribal ¡Council ¡and ¡have ¡worked ¡on ¡many ¡community ¡based ¡research ¡projects ¡ with ¡the ¡Tribe ¡over ¡the ¡last ¡15 ¡years ¡or ¡so. ¡ ¡I ¡have ¡lived ¡my ¡entire ¡life ¡in ¡the ¡ Kotzebue ¡region, ¡a ¡lot ¡of ¡time ¡spent ¡living ¡in ¡the ¡country ¡where ¡I ¡grew ¡up ¡with ¡ my ¡ parents, ¡ hunting, ¡ fishing, ¡ dog ¡ mushing, ¡ and ¡ gathering ¡ resources ¡ for ¡ our ¡ living. ¡ ¡ I ¡ am ¡ going ¡ to ¡ go ¡ over ¡ a ¡ little ¡ bit ¡ of ¡ the ¡ kinds ¡ of ¡ community ¡ based ¡ projects ¡the ¡Tribe ¡and ¡I ¡have ¡been ¡involved ¡with. ¡ The ¡ Native ¡ Village ¡ of ¡ Kotzebue ¡ in ¡ cooperation ¡ with ¡ its ¡ members ¡ began ¡ to ¡ research ¡ the ¡ ecology ¡ of ¡ Kotzebue ¡ Sound ¡ and ¡ focus ¡ on ¡ some ¡ of ¡ the ¡ more ¡ important ¡resources ¡like ¡seals ¡and ¡sheefish. ¡ ¡Alex ¡Whiting, ¡the ¡Environmental ¡ Specialist ¡with ¡the ¡Tribe ¡since ¡1997, ¡began ¡and ¡coordinates ¡all ¡of ¡these ¡efforts. ¡ ¡ I ¡have ¡personally ¡worked ¡on ¡many ¡of ¡these ¡projects ¡helping ¡to ¡collect ¡samples, ¡ do ¡field ¡work, ¡catch ¡seals ¡and ¡tag ¡seals. ¡ ¡This ¡first ¡slide ¡is ¡the ¡cover ¡of ¡a ¡book ¡ that ¡ was ¡ published ¡ based ¡ on ¡ three ¡ years ¡ of ¡ field ¡ studies ¡ that ¡ worked ¡ to ¡ combine ¡ Inupiaq ¡ and ¡ scientific ¡ knowledge ¡ to ¡ paint ¡ a ¡ general ¡ picture ¡ of ¡ the ¡ ecology ¡ of ¡ the ¡ Sound. ¡ This ¡ project ¡ was ¡ funded ¡ by ¡ the ¡ National ¡ Science ¡ Foundation ¡ and ¡ was ¡ titled: ¡ Forging ¡ cooperative ¡ ties ¡ between ¡ scientists ¡ and ¡ arctic ¡indigenous ¡people ¡-­‑ ¡an ¡Inupiaq ¡example. ¡ ¡I ¡brought ¡a ¡couple ¡of ¡copies ¡ for ¡people ¡to ¡look ¡at ¡and ¡they ¡can ¡also ¡be ¡purchased ¡through ¡seagrant ¡at ¡UAF. ¡ Slide ¡2 ¡– ¡This ¡is ¡a ¡picture ¡of ¡Kotzebue ¡Sound. ¡ ¡Most ¡of ¡the ¡work ¡we ¡carry ¡out ¡is ¡ done ¡in ¡the ¡northern ¡Sound ¡along ¡the ¡Sisualik ¡Krusenstern ¡coast. ¡ ¡This ¡is ¡also ¡ where ¡I ¡have ¡a ¡camp ¡and ¡grew ¡up ¡with ¡my ¡parents ¡living ¡off ¡the ¡land. ¡ Slide ¡3 ¡– ¡This ¡slide ¡is ¡from ¡a ¡poster ¡drawn ¡by ¡Alex ¡Whiting ¡to ¡be ¡used ¡in ¡the ¡ Ecology ¡Book ¡and ¡a ¡lot ¡of ¡the ¡species ¡shown ¡were ¡gathered ¡during ¡the ¡sample ¡ trawling ¡ of ¡ the ¡ project. ¡ ¡ The ¡ poster ¡ was ¡ also ¡ meant ¡ to ¡ be ¡ given ¡ out ¡ to ¡ the ¡ community ¡for ¡the ¡schools ¡and ¡for ¡people ¡to ¡put ¡in ¡their ¡homes ¡and ¡especially ¡ their ¡camps ¡where ¡many ¡kids ¡and ¡others ¡beachcomb, ¡but ¡don’t ¡always ¡know ¡ what ¡the ¡different ¡kinds ¡of ¡clams, ¡starfish, ¡and ¡other ¡things ¡that ¡they ¡find ¡are. ¡

Slide ¡4 ¡– ¡This ¡map ¡is ¡from ¡the ¡book ¡and ¡shows ¡northern ¡Kotzebue ¡Sound ¡and ¡ the ¡ resources ¡ found ¡ there ¡ based ¡ on ¡ interviews ¡ done ¡ during ¡ the ¡ ecology ¡ project, ¡which ¡I ¡helped ¡with. ¡ Slide ¡5 ¡– ¡The ¡Tribe ¡started ¡the ¡seal ¡tagging ¡efforts ¡in ¡2004 ¡with ¡a ¡Tribal ¡Wildlife ¡ Grant ¡ from ¡ US ¡ Fish ¡ and ¡ Wildlife ¡ Service ¡ and ¡ used ¡ this ¡ program, ¡ along ¡ with ¡ funding ¡from ¡Shell, ¡Conoco ¡phillips, ¡National ¡Fish ¡and ¡Wildlife ¡Foundation, ¡the ¡ National ¡ Marine ¡ Mammal ¡ Lab ¡ and ¡ the ¡ tribe ¡ itself ¡ to ¡ continue ¡ seal ¡ tagging ¡ studies ¡ until ¡ 2012. ¡ ¡ 2004 ¡ was ¡ the ¡ first ¡ time ¡ bearded ¡ seals ¡ had ¡ been ¡ successfully ¡live ¡captured ¡and ¡fitted ¡with ¡satellite ¡tags. ¡ ¡Many ¡of ¡our ¡members ¡ were ¡ involved ¡ with ¡ these ¡ efforts ¡ -­‑ ¡ around ¡ a ¡ couple ¡ of ¡ dozen ¡ in ¡ total ¡ have ¡ helped ¡ capture, ¡ tag ¡ and ¡ sample ¡ animals. ¡ ¡ Much ¡ of ¡ the ¡ work ¡ was ¡ done ¡ at ¡ Sisualik ¡with ¡campers ¡living ¡there ¡and ¡it ¡was ¡the ¡first ¡time ¡where ¡local ¡people ¡ were ¡permitted ¡to ¡capture, ¡tag, ¡and ¡sample ¡animals ¡without ¡scientists ¡being ¡ present ¡-­‑ ¡as ¡three ¡local ¡people ¡were ¡on ¡the ¡federal ¡tagging ¡permit. ¡ ¡One ¡of ¡ things ¡we ¡needed ¡to ¡know ¡was ¡where ¡seals ¡spend ¡their ¡time ¡when ¡they ¡are ¡ not ¡in ¡Kotzebue ¡Sound ¡and ¡also ¡to ¡find ¡out ¡more ¡about ¡things ¡like ¡how ¡deep ¡ they ¡dive ¡and ¡how ¡long ¡they ¡stay ¡underwater ¡feeding. ¡ ¡Knowing ¡where ¡they ¡go ¡ would ¡ allow ¡ the ¡ Tribe ¡ to ¡ know ¡ who ¡ else ¡ is ¡ hunting ¡ them ¡ and ¡ better ¡ help ¡ protect ¡ them ¡ from ¡ things ¡ like ¡ shipping ¡ and ¡ offshore ¡ oil ¡ development. ¡ ¡ In ¡ addition ¡ as ¡ the ¡ climate ¡ continues ¡ to ¡ change, ¡ especially ¡ the ¡ ice ¡ pack, ¡ this ¡ information ¡will ¡be ¡used ¡to ¡help ¡understand ¡how ¡seals ¡are ¡being ¡impacted ¡in ¡ the ¡future. ¡ ¡ ¡ Slide ¡6 ¡– ¡The ¡total ¡seals ¡tagged ¡during ¡the ¡fall ¡time ¡camp ¡based ¡efforts ¡from ¡ 2004 ¡through ¡2009 ¡was ¡41 ¡ringed ¡seals ¡and ¡37 ¡young ¡bearded ¡seals. ¡ ¡The ¡total ¡ number ¡for ¡the ¡summer ¡effort, ¡was ¡7 ¡adult ¡and ¡subadult ¡bearded ¡seals. ¡ ¡A ¡new ¡ effort ¡ will ¡ begin ¡ this ¡ year ¡ working ¡ with ¡ the ¡ Alaska ¡ Department ¡ of ¡ Fish ¡ and ¡ Game ¡ Marine ¡ Mammal ¡ Division ¡ with ¡ the ¡ goal ¡ of ¡ increasing ¡ the ¡ number ¡ of ¡ adult ¡bearded ¡seals ¡tagged. ¡ ¡For ¡all ¡years ¡the ¡male ¡to ¡female ¡ratio ¡was ¡close ¡to ¡ 50/50, ¡which ¡was ¡great ¡for ¡being ¡able ¡to ¡compare ¡any ¡differences ¡in ¡behavior ¡ between ¡the ¡sexes, ¡of ¡which ¡there ¡is ¡some. ¡
