Short-Term Faculty-Led Study Abroad Brian Stiegler,PhD Assistant Provost for International Education
Advantages of Short-Term Faculty- Led Study Abroad Enhances sacred bond between professors and students Summer and winter terms do not interrupt curriculum flow of four year degree Accredited programs with strict course requirements can make semester study abroad harder Students who have not traveled may not be capable of full semester immersion study abroad programs Families, friends, loved ones can be more supportive of shorter programs
Disadvantages of Short-term Faculty-Led Study Abroad Short-term programs do not allow for easy mobility of financial aid Summer and winter semesters add costs on top of regular semesters while semester programs replace one set of costs with another Short programs often do not encourage deeper cultural learning as mid- length programs Language study is very difficult on short-programs

Financial and Administrative Infrastructure External Infrastructure – Pre-approved travel agents – No state procurement process – Short-term international health insurance – Short-term political/natural disaster evacuation insurance – International wire- transfer through State Budget Office – University-issued credit cards
Academics on Short-Term Faculty-Led Study Abroad Learning goals and outcomes must be comparable or higher than similar courses on main campus Requirements for contact hours / credit hour must be met along with other accreditation concerns Contact hours must be earned abroad (not on main campus) if tuition is to be applied to study abroad costs Learning should happen in the field, not a classroom on the other side of the world
Academics on Short-Term Faculty-Led Study Abroad Short programs should continue to encourage reading and writing along with experience Learning must be assessed and measured Field-based experiential learning should look different in different disciplines according to learning goals Academic departments and deans should approve academic content Are there common global learning goals that all study abroad programs should achieve?
