How can urban nature benefit our health and wellbeing? • Growing evidence for the health and wellbeing benefits of having access to green and blue spaces in neighbourhoods (Bowler et al 2010; Tzoulas et al 2007; Maheswaren, 2010; Wheeler et al 2015) • Three ways wellbeing improves through contact with green spaces: 1) recovery from stress and attention restoration (Kaplan et al 1995 ; Pretty et al 2005); 2) increased social contact (Maas et al 2009); 3) increased physical exercise (Kaczynski et al 2007)

IWUN aims • Evaluate the ways in which the quality and quantity of urban green space impacts on the health and wellbeing of Sheffield residents • Explore the cultures and values that influence how people of different ages and backgrounds interact with the natural environment • Develop a method to measure the cost-effectiveness of natural environments to help determine the ways in which they could play a significant part in the UK’s future healthcare arrangements • Work out how urban green space can be used to deliver health and social care
