  1. SHIFT²RAIL R&D Priorities for Concrete Results Josef Doppelbauer Chairman of the SHIFT²RAIL Steering Committee VP Research & Technology, Bombardier Transportation 19 February 2014, Athens

  2. Setting expectations The future SHIFT²RAIL Joint Undertaking  Which objectives?  Which R&I priorities?  Which concrete deliverables?  Which structure? 2

  3. Improving mobility and making daily life easier  3 major challenges  ENHANCING CAPACITY ( to cope with growing EU demand ) Up to 100% increase in capacity  CONSOLIDATING RELIABILITY ( to better satisfy users ) Up to 50% increase of reliability  REDUCING LIFE CYCLE COSTS ( for more competitiveness ) Up to 50% of reduction of Life Cycle Costs  Impacting all segments of the rail market! 3

  4. SHIFT²RAIL Research Priorities IP2: Advanced Traffic IP1: Energy & Mass Management & Efficient Technologies for Control Systems High Capacity Trains IP3: Cost Efficient IP5: Technologies for High Capacity Sustainable & Attractive IP4: IT Solutions for a Infrastructure European Freight Seamless Attractive Railway 4

  5. IP 1: HIGH CAPACITY TRAINS  STAKE AT EU LEVEL: Doors and PRM Maintain a competitive European Solutions rolling stock supply industry in the worldwide market by developing the future generation Traction Brake of trains. Systems Systems  CHALLENGE: HIGH Design trains that will be lighter CAPACITY and more energy efficient, TRAINS causing less track damage and less impact on the environment, Wireless Train thereby delivering a lower Running Control & whole life cost . Gear Managemt At the same time, operational System reliability of trains will be increased, ensuring that Carbody- passengers get to destination on shells time and delivering a better quality of service 5

  6. IP 2: ADVANCED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL SYSTEMS  STAKE AT EU LEVEL : Maintaining the dominance of Capacity ERTMS as a solution for and railway signalling and control Efficiency Surge systems across the world, while extending synergies and interoperability with the urban and mass transit railway sectors and speeding up the time to market. ADVANCED  TRAFFIC CHALLENGE: MANAGEMENT Develop a new generation of AND CONTROL signalling and control SYSTEMS systems, building on current ERTMS, to enable intelligent traffic management with Dependable Smart automatically driven trains Safe Procurement Signalling and optimise capacity, & Testing System reliability and minimise Life Cycle Costs. 6

  7. IP 3: COST EFFICIENT HIGH CAPACITY INFRASTRUCTURE  STAKE AT EU LEVEL: Develop the pan European Track railway infrastructure into a high availability, low cost transport carrier to attract a shift from less sustainable and safe modes of transport. in doing so we can delivering Switches & Tunnels & Crossings COST an energy efficient, Bridges EFFICIENT sustainable transport system HIGH for the union.. CAPACITY  INFRA- CHALLENGE: STRUCTURE Deliver a new railway infrastructure system (including both infrastructure and energy subsystems) with a breakthrough that will Energy Intelligent Efficiency Maintenance radically improve capacity and performance and reduce costs. 7

  8. IP 4: SEAMLESS ATTRACTIVE RAILWAY  STAKE AT EU LEVEL: Coordinat. Reduce the fragmentation of and the pan-European transport demonstr. landscape and foster a more Interoperability Business seamless and end-user framework analytics friendly approach for travel shopping, ticketing, travel companion and real time re- adaptation addressing multi- SEAMLESS modal travel (air, rail and ATTRACTIVE RAILWAYS urban) Travel Travel shopping companion  CHALLENGE: By 2020, establish the framework for a European multimodal transport information, management and Ticketing Trip-tracker payment system (Goal # 8 of the Transport White paper 8 2011).

  9. IP 5: SUSTAINABLE & ATTRACTIVE EUROPEAN FREIGHT TRANSPORT  STAKES AT EU LEVEL: • Improve the productivity of Propulsion rail freight transport in Europe. • Provide an attractive, energy efficient, low carbon Electric and competitive rail freight control line, Access and service as mentioned in the brakes, operations SUSTAINABLE Transport White Paper. controls & ATTRACTIVE EUROPEAN  CHALLENGE: FREIGHT • Provide technological and TRANSPORT logistics breakthroughs • Solutions must have good ROI for the actors • Provide EU common values Terminals in growth, competitiveness, Wagon and efficiency, decongestion, marshalling low carbon and less fossil fuel dependence 9

  10. Systematic Approach for Delivery 1. Development of prototypes in labs with the “Technology Demonstrators” (TDs) 2. Integration and demonstration at system level through “System Platform Demonstrations” (SPDs) developed for each targeted market segment  High Speed/Mainline  Regional  Urban/Metro & Suburban  Freight 10

  11. Success Factors Implementation of a successful technology break- through with  the industrialisation commitment of the Founders  the involvement of the entire rail sector & supply chain actors  the key role of the European Railway Agency (ERA)  the European Commission in the commitment to create a Single European Railway Area 11
