Session 15 Understanding Challenging Behaviour SECTION 5: 1 Behaviour
There are many possible factors influencing challenging behaviour • Social –person can’t communicate except through screaming, hitting etc • Biological –person has a condition which predisposes him to behaviour that challenges eg: autism or Prader Willi syndrome SECTION 5: 2 Behaviour
More factors • Mental health difficulties -depression and anxiety disorders are more likely in people with SLD/ PMLD than in the typical population • Medication – side effects may influence behaviour eg: irritability or sleepiness SECTION 5: 3 Behaviour
More factors • Physical health – pain can be associated with CB eg: toothache can cause people to hit their faces or heads • Developmental – behaviour that is associated with a younger child but persists eg: eating unsuitable things or pulling hair SECTION 5: 4 Behaviour
More factors • Environmental – noisy, hot, busy environments can trigger CB • People with autism particularly need calm, ordered and uncluttered environments SECTION 5: 5 Behaviour
Cathy has autism and eczema • After hot, sleepless night spent scratching, Cathy is irritable and refuses breakfast • She is tired, hungry and can’t explain what is wrong • At her day service she is stopped from swimming because of her scratched arms and legs • She travels next to a service user she dislikes • Cathy likes routine and hates change so she shouts and scratches even more How would you sort this out?
