  5. Education in the 21 st century The Provincial Standing Committee on education reforms identified several educational issues such as: • Approx 7.6 of the BC population is currently receiving income assistance • Fully 84% of them have not completed grade twelve • However, Grade 12 will not be sufficient to meet the future workforce needs: • “Employment projections estimate that more than 70% of the projected job openings by 2013 will require post secondary completion.” Post secondary education has two positive effects for the provincial economy: 1. Produces qualified individuals able to secure employment and contribute in providing government services. 2. Helps reduce the number of people needing social assistance.

  6. A 2003 study by the Alberta Ministry of Advanced education found that:  a high school graduate can expect to earn $30,888 for full-time, year-round work  a person with a bachelor’s degree earns $43,510  someone with an advanced degree $51,914

  7. The Trades • Unemployment among trades is half that of the rest of the population • A 2007 survey of grads from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (Edmonton) 5 years out found some trades grads salaries were higher than medical school students who graduated in the same year. • Trades also require credentials, but programs usually last 1-2 years instead of the 4-10 years university degrees require.

  12. Cost of post-secondary Costs vary by program 1. College approx. $250-$500 a course + fees approx. $300 + books $600-$1000 + living expenses 2. University approx. $600 a course + fees approx. $600 + books $1000-$2000 + living expenses 3. Full-time studies could cost you over $7000 a year for 8 courses or more. Then you need to add living expenses on top of that. 4. If you are an International student it will cost you 2-3X more.
