  3. 3 Chan Chung Yan (Joyce) 11059202 Seminar Presentation part 2- An Essay on Case Study In order to exemplify my chosen topic- dance music, here are the background information of dance and music, with an example in referencing the waltz music. Dance and music Dance and music are linked together. Dance refers to the art of movement of the body, while music provides the rhythmic pattern for steps and gestures in dance. Dance music is something newly codified language of social gesture (Buch,1994). In dance, there are several way and kind in different period. Such as the flamenco and tap dance, it is a form of Spanish folk dance. While the rhythm is the focal point, music acts as an integral part. Furthermore, in avant-garde dance, which appeared in 1960s, is focusing on non- dance movements. Running, walking or specific tasks are new alternatives to modern dance of expressive movements. Therefore, repeated rhythmic and single musical pattern are used. From these, it is true that dance music shows its importance and has its significant usage in dance. Music problems - waltz music While in Waltz music, which I have chosen as the specific topic for my project, has a graceful and smooth genre. Waltz was appeared in the 18th century. Its music has a significant rhythm that is triple in time. It is for couples spinning around in the room with this specifically composed music. The word “Waltz” is from German, which describes the rotating and turning movement characteristic of dance (Lamb 2001). Classical composers supplied music for dancing. Waltz is popular ballroom dances. It is originated from country-dances. In the beginning of the 19th century, it was danced by royal and noble dances in Vienna. Nowadays, it is a popular dance at weddings and social events. While waltz music is for dancing long and flowing movements, with continuous turns, rise-and-fall actions. It is graceful and elegant with repetitions, which act as basis of an art song or operatic aria (Ballroomdancers.com, 2014). In waltz dance, it has characteristics, which is

  4. 4 Chan Chung Yan (Joyce) 11059202 progressive by moving counter clockwise around the dance floor. Both the posture and frame are relaxed. Dancer’s shoulders move smoothly with rise-and-fall action. Waltz is unique in its rhythm. The beat for music and dance go at the same moment. The rhythm of waltz is three beats in a measure, counting in 1,2,3,1,2,3 … With the accented beat on the first beat, and a flowing feel in the second and third beat, dancers can feel the gentle and easy movement of the dance. Moreover, the first beat measure will help for the confidence in the dance. Music acts as the third dance partner. Therefore, dance and music are coexisting. Music also acts as an important part in dancing.

  5. 5 Chan Chung Yan (Joyce) 11059202 Case study: Waltz in A minor- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28aMqUBJww4 Problems solved by this work To introduce waltz dance music, Waltz in A minor foster movements and relaxing mood in the society. It is a Chopin’s piano waltz written in 1843. It has a form of lyric miniature, associating with smoothing, rotating and gliding sway. The style of this waltz is in Romantic period. It implicates smooth body swaying movements in showing mood of great sadness at time but hinting at happiness and hope. The tempo is Allegretto; and the rhythm is slow, elegant, romantic and glamorous. Effectiveness of musical elements and strategies Waltz music shows the character of the footwork for mastering and identifies the beat. It is with the ¾ meter and the first beat is with an accent. It helps in introducing dancers for its beat and mood in dancing. “Flat foot” ,”Heel”, ”Toe”, “inside edge of the ball” are basic footwork positions in Waltz. The waltz music adds to the fluidity of the movement. Dancers start with a flexed knee and gradually reaching the highest rise in the dance on count 3 and 6 (Zona and George, 2008). Therefore, in phrasing, there is continuity of movements, such as repetition and imitation of tuneful melodies in every double “three beats”. These are seen in reflecting the rise-and-fall motion when travelling around the floor. While the two themes of the song conveyed a suitable mood for dancers, the first one is simple but melodic, with decorative ornaments. It conveys a sad mood. Then it is livelier and interesting in the second theme, in the halfway of the piece, there is a modulation into A major with a joyful melody. At last, it concludes with the main theme. The form is “A-B-A-C-A” with a short coda. There is a melancholic A minor theme in section A, with a solemn quaver melody played in the right (AllMusic, 2014). While section B is in E major, which is highly decorated with large sweeping arpeggio's. Section C has a modulation to A major.

  6. 6 Chan Chung Yan (Joyce) 11059202 Target place and audience Waltzes should be limited to a small room, inspiring intimacy and longing. Besides, the audience of waltz is dancers for all age in pairs. Dancers seen waltz dance as social activity in ballroom or in wedding occasions. Information conveyed Though there is no special information in the waltz in A minor, but it guides dancers in a soft and gentle mood. The floating quality dancing with feeling and expression is important. The waltz pictures dancers and let them enjoy with the music. All in all, the field of cultural industry this waltz music fits in the music and dance in small room. It is to color dancing with appropriate mood and style. While I think more musical elements and instruments can be added in. Such as strings, it gives a smooth and romantic feeling. Dancing is walking to music. Though different people have their own emotions when listening to the same music piece. The waltz music is essential, as it not only suggest the way of dace, but also the feelings of music and body movements. Music and dance is therefore supplement to each other.
