  1. Securing Australia’s Future Energy with Storage Anand I. Bhatt | Research Team Leader Australian Energy Storage Alliance –Networking Evening – Thursday 26 th March 2015 ENERGY FLAGSHIP

  2. What’s happening in Australia’s grid? Cost of electricity ↑ Cost of solar PV & energy storage (ES) continue ↓ Big opportunity for energy storage Source: http://reneweconomy.com.au/2014/ubs-australian-households-go-grid-2018

  3. Energy Storage and the Grid Characteristic properties of different energy storage systems lend themselves to varying roles in the “grid” Strongly dependent on either energy storage or power delivery or mixes thereof Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration

  4. Maturity of different ES technologies From the various technologies available some are feasible for applications at present, whilst others require further development/mass production or fundamental R&D A wide range of technology options exist Each technology has advantages and disadvantages and potential different uses on the grid Source: Fraunhofer ISE, IEC White Paper

  5. Australian Energy Stakeholder Views CSIRO has surveyed 122 stakeholders from across the energy sector including: • Technology companies • Representative industry bodies • Government • Utilities • Research institutes Key findings: • Need more active industry participation with proven pilot projects to increase confidence in technology • Lack of regulatory policies • 55% of industry respondents believe Li-ion batteries are the most appropriate option • Desire for standard evaluation method for different storage technologies Source: CSIRO Report: Securing Australia’s Future Energy with Storage, 2014

  6. What is CSIRO doing? Developing software tools to model energy storage technologies Develop additional evaluation profiles based on real application data Test and evaluate a range of different battery technologies : Pb ‐ acid, Li ‐ ion, NiMH, advanced Pb ‐ acid Modelling LV/distribution network to determine ES locations

  7. CSIRO Energy Storage Technology Evaluation Method Accelerated testing profile developed based on real application data Size and technology independent Variety of test scenarios being developed, keen to get stakeholders involved Source: CSIRO Report: Securing Australia’s Future Energy with Storage, Sept 2014

  8. Evaluating energy storage solutions No agreed international standards or processes evaluate technologies for PV-storage Overseas example of solar evaluation profile for energy storage technology evaluation

  9. Evaluation of Energy Storage systems By having a good understanding of generation and Australian conditions, accurate evaluation protocols can be established to identify ES technologies Source: CSIRO Report: Securing Australia’s Future Energy with Storage, 2014

  10. Evaluation of Energy Storage systems By having a good understanding of generation and Australian conditions, accurate evaluation protocols can be established to identify ES technologies Source: CSIRO Report: Securing Australia’s Future Energy with Storage, Sept 2014

  11. Summary • Technologies have to be able to cope with Australian climate and geographic limitations • Will affect technology lifetimes • Evaluation of technologies needs to be accomplished – CSIRO has developed a Australian specific, technology independent evaluation method • No internationally agreed methods to do this • Profiles based on real application data – test under similar conditions to application
