Big Ideas and Essential Questions: Who decides…? What is…? When should we…? How do we understand …? Where…? Why…? I am...? We are…? 2
In 2011, we opened the doors to our reimagined science centre- a place that’s, in fact, much more than a science centre. TELUS Spark’s vision is to foster a community transformed by a culture of curiosity, risk-taking and problem solving. Our mission is to bring people together to learn, play and create with science, technology, engineering, art and math. “Innovation is the art of seeing possibilities. It’s having the knack to create what is needed with the resources you have at hand. It’s the ability to think just a little bit differently about a challenge- and to see it as an opportunity.” (Jennifer Martin) 3
Mission We bring people together to learn, play and create with science, technology, engineering, art and math. Core Values COLLABORATION We believe that encouraging debate and dialogue, embracing diverse perspectives, and that partnership with our communities result in better ideas and outcomes. COMMITMENT We are passionate about our mission and pursue it in everything we do and how we do it. CURIOSITY We are always wondering, always questioning, always seeking to learn. COURAGE We believe in innovative thinking and taking risks. We embrace change. Our courage to fail gives us the confidence to succeed. 4
Ignite curiosity. TELUS Spark is a place where young people build new ideas. Hands- on activities spark a sense of wonder. Experiences provide students with the opportunity to explore while they develop new skills. Get neurons firing at Chevron Open Minds Science School. Collaborate to solve problems and spark a passion for learning through science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Ideas for inspiration: • Explore the design process. Discover the connections among engineering, innovation, technology and art through collaborative design projects. • Spark passion for STEAM through risk taking in a safe environment with activities designed to build courage. • Fuel creativity and learning through play. 5
