Hello Kent / Getting Started • Familiarise yourself with the online Postgraduate Taught Student Handbook - blogs.kent.ac.uk/pgthandbook/ • Find out who directs your programme of study. • Meet your school’s Postgraduate Administrator. • Find out who your programme convenor is within your academic school. • Find out when and where your lectures, seminars, labs, work spaces are. • Acquaint yourself with your School’s support processes – tutor/academic advisor etc. • Check deadlines and examination dates. • Find out the name of your academic liaison librarian and visit the library to discover the resources available in your subject area. • Check your Kent emails on a regular basis. • HAVE FUN!

Global Skills Award Programme • The GSA programme is designed to enhance global awareness and employability. • All Master’s degree students are invited to enrol onto the programme, alongside their Master’s. • The programme is open from October 2019 – May 2020. • Those enrolled complete an on-line personal development assessment. • Students attend a lecture series on national and global issues and a selection of workshops. • All those who complete invited to a reward ceremony and receive a GSA Programme Certificate.
How do I obtain the award? • Enrolment onto the GSA is available from 17th September 2019. • Attend the Introduction Evening (7 th October – part of #EmpFest19) • Complete the initial personal development assessment via the online booking system: https://bloom.kent.ac.uk • Attend a minimum of 3 lectures from the lecture series and 3 workshops from the workshop programme. • Complete a final GSA evaluation via the online system at the end of the programme. Your Faculty Sciences • Comprises of 7 Schools: • Biosciences • Computing • Engineering and Digital Arts • Maths, Statistics and Actuarial Science • Pharmacy • Physical Sciences • Sport and Exercise Sciences What makes Science Science? The scientific method "a method or procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.” (OED) … but, is scientific practise the same thing? Probably not…curiosity driven…serendipitous. … but, in the end we need to present our results rigorously, disinterestedly and critically …in whatever way is canonical for our subject. Science and technology are also about skills… ...which we might learn in a formal course …or from our neighbour at the lab bench/computer room
Community and diversity Highlights from our activity: • Understanding how exercise can help people after illness and injury. • Understanding the fundamental algebraic structures in the mathematical world. • Finding new ways to capture images of the living eye • Preventing historical artefacts from decay. • Understanding how to effectively deliver medicines for maximum efficacy. • Using social media technology to help with the social challenges of aging. • Measuring and predicting how proteins fold and what the implications are for the living cell. • Finding new ways to protect personal information in computer networks.
Broadening your Horizons • At the Masters level, you will acquire many of the skills needed to engage in a serious way with cutting edge research • One of the great things about studying for a Masters is the time it affords to engage with a rich research community right on your doorstep Top Tips to make the most out of your academic experience: • Go along to the research seminars and guest lectures hosted by your Schools • Look out for Inaugural and open lectures offered within the Faculty and across the University • Take advantage of the conferences, workshops & reading groups run across the Faculty

#PGVoice Get involved and make your voice heard! There are a range of mechanisms you can use to provide feedback on the quality of your academic and social experiences as a postgraduate student at Kent. All Postgraduates are a part of Woolf College Assistance and Support • The College Master’s Office is one of the first places to come if you are experiencing problems. • All matters are dealt with in the strictest confidence. • The College Community Life Assistant is also a key contact for those of your living on campus. Enhancing College Life • The Master supports the work of the KGSA who organises College social events and represents Woolf students. • The Master organises events for the benefit of the Woolf community. • The Postgraduate Common Room is located in the main building of Woolf and is a social space for ALL postgraduate students. Enforcing the University’s Non -Academic Regulations • There is a set of University regulations that apply to all students living on and off campus. You are strongly advised to familiar yourself with these regulations. • Talk to your housemates or come and speak to the College Master in confidence if you are unsure of anything within the regulations or if conflict arises during your time at Kent. • The College Community Life Assistant is a postgraduate student employed to work with the Master to enhance student life. Contact them if you have any problems.
