Sc Scho hool Re Renaming: g: Propo posed d Process for School Board d Re Review Proposed Renaming Process Step 1 According to policy, the School Board must first officially announce its intention to rename a school. The Administration is requesting that the Board take such action this evening on E.S.H. Greene Elementary School, George Mason Elementary School, the new Middle School on Hull Street, and Amelia Street School. Step 2 Each school will create a “Renaming Team” (RT) made up of the individuals listed below. The RT will attend the community meetings and official Board public hearings on the renaming process, will review all names submitted by the public along with related feedback, and will select three names to submit to the Administration for consideration. Each RT will be chaired by the school’s principal. Each RT will also include: 2 students from each school (in the case of the new middle school, we will use Elkhardt-Thompson as the • school community) 2 teachers from each school • 2 support staff from each school • 2 family members from each school • 2 community stakeholders from each school • The relevant School Board member • A representative from the Administration • 2 Richmond Public Schools | September 16, 2019

All submissions will be public. RPS will also hold community engagement sessions according to the schedule below in order for each school’s Renaming Team to hear nominations from members of the public, along with feedback about names already nominated. All community engagement sessions will be public and live-streamed. School Board Public Hearings All 4 Schools City Hall - 17th Floor City Hall - 17th Floor November 4, 2019 November 18, 2019 6:00 PM 6:00 PM Step 4 Each Renaming Team will meet by November 23 to choose three names to forward to the Administration. (The Amelia Street RT can use the end of their second community meeting on November 23 for this purpose, if desired.) Step 5 The Administration will review all feedback related to the three names provided by each school’s Renaming Team, and then select one for each school as a formal recommendation to the Board for adoption at the December 2 School Board meeting. The School Board will vote to accept the Administration’s recommendation or choose one of the other names recommended by each school’s Renaming Team. 4 Richmond Public Schools | September 16, 2019

No Notes o on E Enga gage gement • Meeting schedules and meeting minutes will be posted on the RPS website. • All meetings will be public. • Each Renaming Team member will be charged with soliciting input from their respective communities. • Students, staff, family members, and members of the public will be able to submit recommendations, along with supporting information, online, in-person at one of the community meetings or School Board Public Hearings, and via a paper form that will be available at all four school sites. • All submissions will be posted on the RPS website. 5 Richmond Public Schools | September 16, 2019
