National Exercise Referral Scheme Vale of Glamorgan Council
What is it? • NERS is a physical activity scheme • It is for people who have a medical condition that would benefit form exercise • It is aimed at adults aged 16+ • NERS provides a ‘starting block’ for people to become more active and benefit their health
What does it consist of? • NERS is a structured programme of exercise • NERS in the Vale has exercise classes and gym usage included as part of the scheme • NERS lasts between 16 and 48 weeks depending on medical condition • NERS has trained instructors who monitor and motivate clients to achieve • NERS was evaluated in 2010 and deemed cost effective against other traditional methods of treatment. http://gov.wales/docs/caecd/research/101104nationalex erciseschemeen.pdf
Who funds it? • NERS is funded by Public Health Wales (PHW) • NERS is a partnership between (PHW), Welsh Local Government Association, The Vale of Glamorgan Council and Local Health Boards. • NERS grant allocations fund staffing and equipment costs. • NERS generates income for Leisure centres and leads to increased memberships, usage and secondary expenditure.
What are the benefits of being more active? • Better Weight Management • Reduce Blood Pressure • Reduced risk of heart disease and stroke • Reduced risk of some cancers • Reduce stress and anxiety • Improved mental and social wellbeing • Increase energy • Increased strength, mobility, co-ordination and balance • Improved health and wellbeing
How does it work? • NERS is accessed via a health professional • Each GP practice in the Vale has access to the scheme • Physiotherapists, Dieticians and Mental Health teams can also refer. • The medical practitioner fills in a form and the details are passed to NERS.
