SBND Detector Specifications • TPC in liquid argon for neutrino interaction tracking § 112-ton active LAr volume, 270-ton total LAr § 4m tall x 5m wideand 4m in drift direction – two drift volumes § Cathode Plane Assembles (CPA) in the middle § Anode Plane Assembles (APAs) on the two ends § APA has 3 wire planes with 3mm pitch and spacing: vertical (y) and ± 60 o (U&V) § Cold electronics to have 10:1 S/N ratio and noise level below 800-electron • Cryogenic PMTs as primary system for scintillator light collection § 15 photo-electron/MeV light yield from PMTs, 5ns timing resolution or better § 2nd system –DUNE-style light collection R&D – opportunity for new contributions • Cosmic ray tagger has 4π sold angle coverage around TPC • DAQ is based on uBooNE design and uses PMTs to tag beam events § More opportunity to contribute 3 4/27/2016 Ting Miao / SBND

SBND Detector Timeline • SBND is in detailing design stage through 2016 o TPC component fabrication design o TPC electronics ASICs and front-end mother boards o PMT coating and testing, readout and integration designs o CRT production design finished in March and in production o Cryostat and cryogenics designs and contracting o DAQ readout designs: timing synchronization and trigger • Detector component fabrications to finish by summer 2017 • Detector assembly and testing at Dzero to finish by Spring 2018 • Detector transfer and installation to finish by summer 2018 • Cryogenics and detector commissioning to start late 2018 11 4/27/2016 Ting Miao / SBND
Opportunities for Collaboration • Many subsystems need additional helps on QA/QC, cold tests and assemble/installation/commissioning • Big needs for additional contribution to light collection R&D • Additional resource to increase CRT coverage • More test-stand helps on cold electronics § Continues effort to understand uBooNE and 35T performance § Test-stand as way for through diagnosis of detector operation issues • Detector assembly, installation and commissioning tasks § Both technical and physicist helps to get SBND ready in 2018 12 4/27/2016 Ting Miao / SBND
Summary • SBND detector project is progressing very well • Many key areas need additional helps • SBND is the next new LArTPC physics experiment before the big DUNE detector • Great opportunity to gain experiences on detector building and neutrino analysis 13 4/27/2016 Ting Miao / SBND
