  3. Just Thinking Today’s Gospel is prophetic and beautiful, but also tragic in a way, telling the story of two very elderly people, Simeon and Anna, each of whom had been let in on a little secret by the Holy Spirit. What was that secret? That this ordinary looking little kid from a backwater village called Nazareth was the Son of God, the long-promised Messiah. There’s no way of knowing how long Simeon When it came time to hold this little and Anna had known this secret, but I’d like to bundle, like many elderly men, I would have believe it was a long time because it was such felt very excited, but the excitement would be a wonderful secret, and would have given mixed with just a bit of fear about dropping them hope and pleasure for the whole time. him, or that he’d take one look at me and Just think about you and I being in Simeon’s bust out crying, or that he’d do what babies do and Anna’s place. What would we have felt? at very inconvenient times sometimes. I can’t speak for you, but I think one of my Telling the parents, especially the mom, what I feelings would have been one of privilege, knew about the child’s future would be awfully feeling honored at being told about this by hard, just because it was worded so God himself. Of course, being human and not mysteriously, but that’s all the Spirit gave me as holy as Simeon and Anna, a little bit of to work with. And telling the mom, just a child unearned pride might have crept in -- you herself, about her own fate would just about know, the “I know something you don’t kill me. know!!” syndrome. I’m pretty sure God would forgive that little slip though, because I’d also Handing the baby back to the mom would be be feeling very humble, a feeling of, “ Why in hard in spite of my fears. How often does a Heaven’s name did God choose me to tell? guy get to hold God in his hands? I think my I’m pretty far down the pecking order around last thoughts of the day would be a weird mix here!” of contentment that my greatest wish -- to see the Savior -- had actually happened, sadness for what I knew the child and his mom would endure, and a longing for eternal peace. I would be ready to die because the events I had just taken part in could never be topped. Fast forward to 2020: We get the chance to hold God in our hands and inside of us every time we go to mass. Simeon and Anna should be so lucky. Roger LeBouton, Lay Minister The Presentation of the Lord page 3
