PIXLEY RENEWABLE ENERGY HUB: ENVISAGED SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE SETTING THE DISTRICT ON A GROWTH PATH PRESENTED BY: SINDISILE MADYO LED MANAGER PKSDM 11 OCTOBER 2013
RURAL GREEN SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES • THE CREDIT CRUNCH LEADING TO THE COLLAPSE OF THE COMMODITY SECTOR HAD A DEVASTATING EFFECT ON OUR DISTRICT RESULTING IN JOB LOSSES IN THE MINING SECTOR IN AND AROUND 2008. THESE TRENDS RESULTED IN A NEW WAY OF THINKING FOR SPHERES OF GOVERNMENT TO ATTRACT INVESTMENT IN AREAS THAT WOULD GIVE AN IMPETUS TO LOCAL ECONOMY. CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS HAD TO BE SOUGHT FAST IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF EVER SHRINKING REVENUE BASE FOR LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES. IN 2010 AN INVESTMENT AND RENEWABLE ENERGY CONFERENCE DECLARED THE PIXLEY KA SEME DISTRICT A RENEWABLE ENERGY HUB. • THE RE HUB IS AIMED AT RURAL INDUSTRIALIZATION AS PIXLEY KA SEME DISTRICT’S UNIQUE AND HUMBLE CONTRIBUTION TO SA’S COMMITMENTS TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD TO PROVIDE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SOLUTIONS . THE HUB SHOULD PROVIDE CLEANER ENERGY AND RURAL INDUSTRIALIZATION PROCESSES IN LINE WITH INTEGRATED RESOURCE PLAN NEW GROWTH PATH, IPAP2, NDP ,NSDF, PGDS, DGDS, LED STRATEGIES AND IDP’S. • THE RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND INDUSTRIALIZATION REQUIRING A DELICATE BALANCE BETWEEN EXISTING KEY ECONOMIC ATTRIBUTES AND A DIVERSE BASE OF KNOWLEDGE AND CLEANER PROCESSES DRIVEN ECONOMY • AGENDA MEANS FORGING PARTNERSHIPS TO ENSURE EXPANSION OF VALUE CHAIN IN ENERGY, AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT ENHANCEMENT, BIOTECHNOLOGY, R&D AND KNOWLEDGE BASED ECONOMY (ICT, INNOVATION- CLEANER PROCESSES , ENGINEERING AND AGRO-PROCESSING). ENHANCE FOOD, ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SECURITY

TARGETED POTENTIAL SITES NC SOLAR PARK A 5 GW SOLAR PARK WOULD REQUIRE BETWEEN 15,000 AND 19,000 HECTARES OF LAND. THIS LAND SHOULD BE FLAT, HAVE A HIGH SOLAR INDEX, AND BE CLOSE TO CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE – E.G. TRANSMISSION NETWORKS, ROADS AND WATER SOURCES AND THE POTENTIAL SITES ARE MARKED WITH YELLOW BELOW: PURPLE REPRESENTS LAND WITHIN 50 KM OF THE ORANGE RIVER
