ITC International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1989 Gross tonnage GT - - Deadweight tonnage DWT - Lightweight tonnage - Displacement
What is a Superyacht? • A luxury yacht • Exclusive or Commercially operated • Motor or sail powered • Professionally crewed • Load line length of >24m officially • <>500 GT (convention limits) • <3,000 GT (crew qualification limits)
ITC – Tonnage Measurements “Gross Tonnage” The volume of all the vessel’s enclosed spaces . A capacity-derived index used to rank a ship Not a weight!! Not to be confused with “Tonnes” or “Tons” Derives from the taxation paid on “ Tuns ” or casks of wine
ITC – Tonnage Measurements DEADWEIGHT TONNAGE • Sum of cargo, fuel, water, ballast, stores, passengers and crew. • Weight carrying capacity • Expressed as DWT • Measured in metric tonnes or tons
ITC – Tonnage Measurements LIGHTWEIGHT Actual weight of the vessel with machinery but no fuel, passengers, cargo, water etc. • Used for drydocking calculations or scrap value of the vessel • Expressed as lightship or lightweight • Measured in metric tonnes or tons
ITC – Tonnage Measurements Displacement Weight of water the hull displaces. • Archimedes Principal • = Deadweight + lightweight • Measured in metric tonnes or tons
ITC – Tonnage Measurements Gross tonnage forms the basis for, • Manning regulations, • Safety rules • Registration fees. • To calculate port dues. • Amongst others..
Classification Society Rules IACS Members (12) - - Societies - Standards - Surveys
Classification Society Commercial Yachts –– Voluntary A classification society establishes and maintains technical standards for the construction and operation of ship and offshore structures. “Fit for purpose” & “Remain in class”
Classification Society Class validate that the construction of a vessel is in accordance with relevant standards and carry out regular surveys in service to ensure continuing compliance . More than 50 organizations offering marine classification, 12 of which are members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).

Classification Society
Classification Society • Class survey status kept online • Class reports can be reviewed to understand the damage. • Class will report on temporary and permanent repairs • Determine vessels docking cycle from class information • Is it a routine class docking or a damage docking? • Was Class informed? • Are the repairers class approved? • Why the change of Class?
SOLAS International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea
SOLAS Private and Commercial Yachts – both under and over 500 GT International maritime treaty which sets the minimum safety standards in the construction, equipment and operation of vessels. The convention requires signatory flag states to ensure that ships flagged by them comply with at least these standards
SOLAS General Provisions CHAPTER I Construction – Stability, machinery & electrical installations CHAPTER II-1 Fire Protection, prevention & extinction CHAPTER II-2 Life Saving Appliances and arrangements CHAPTER III Radiocommunications CHAPTER IV Safety of navigation CHAPTER V Special Measures – Safety & security CHAPTER XI-1/2 28
SOLAS Required certificates • Ship Safety Construction Certificate • Ship Safety Equipment Certificate • Ship Safety Radio Certificate SOLAS Chapter II, III, IV and V

LOAD LINE International Convention on Load Lines - Certificate - Record of Conditions of Assignment - Stability information
LOADLINE Commercial Yachts – both under and over 500 GT Load line certificate certifies that vessel complies with the load line convention. Load line convention basically limits the ships on the minimum freeboard it needs to maintain. The minimum freeboard required by the load line convention is calculated by taking into account many factors including reserve buoyancy of the ship.
ISM Cargo Ship Safety Equipment Certificate - Company Document of Compliance - Yacht Safety Management Certificate - Safety Management System (SMS)
ISM Commercial Yachts - 500 GT and over International standard for the safe operation of ships and for pollution prevention. The ISM Code requires that safeguards be established against the safety and pollution risks involved in shipboard operations, while giving the flexibility to develop and tailor a safety system to an owner’s/ship manager’s specific operation while complying with regulatory requirements. Responsibility for this is placed firmly on the companies charged with the ship’s management .
ISM When reviewing the cause of damage or the incident events, reviewing the relative ISM procedure can assist with why the accident occurred in the first place. Was the crew properly drilled? Was the SMS adequate?
MARPOL International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 73/78
MARPOL All vessels Short for Maritime Pollution Developed by the IMO in an effort to minimise pollution of the oceans and seas, including dumping, oil and air pollution.
MARPOL During a claim, having access to the oil record book and SOPEP can assist in the investigations of a pollution case. Did the vessel have an IOPP certificate? Was the SOPEP followed? SOPEP - Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan IOPP - International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate
LCYC Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY2/LY3) Certificate of Compliance - - Official Log Book - Stability Information - Nautical Charts & Publications - Navigation Activities Records - Training Manual - Onboard Maintenance Manual
Large Yacht Code The Code sets standards of safety and pollution prevention, which are appropriate to the size and operation of the vessel. For vessels of this size, standards are normally set by the relevant international conventions. This Code provides equivalent standards, as permitted by these conventions, where it is not reasonable or practical to comply with the prescriptive requirements of the international convention.
Large Yacht Code • Construction and strength • Weathertight • Machinery • Electrical installations • Steering gear • Bilge pumping • Stability • Life saving appliances – Fire safety • Radio, Navigation & anchors
Super Yacht Compliance & Certification • ITC – Tonnage Measurements • Class Society Rules • SOLAS • ISM • MARPOL • Large Yacht Code
