  13. Mobile – Responsive Design

  14. Why Mobile?  Mobile web users expected to out number desktop web users by the end of 2013  For the first time since 2001, PC sales are projected to be lower than in the previous year  Tablet sales are projected to exceed 100 million in 2013

  15. Native Apps vs Web Apps  Publishers that tried Native Apps and are now backing away  Websites optimized for mobile devices will be the best approach going forward

  16. Mobile Use Case Many popular approaches to mobile optimization are predicated on a myth: that the mobile use case is significantly different from the desktop use case

  17. Mobile Website Optimization

  18. Mobile Website Optimization

  19. Mobile Website Optimization

  20. Mobile Website Optimization

  21. Mobile Website Optimization

  22. Hybrid Approach  Hybrid approach:  Fixed width for desktop  Responsive design with breakpoints for tablets and mobile

  23. Responsive Design Breakpoints

  24. Summary  Responsive design will help our publishers reach the broadest possible audience.  Full-site optimization – NOT a separate, stripped down mobile site  Publishing Technology intends to take full advantage of growing support for HTML5 and CSS3 in mobile browsers:  Native support for audio and video  Caching content for offline use

  25. Phase 1: Live Beta  Build a responsive site on mobile.*  Design for three breakpoints:  Smartphones , “mini” tablets, large tablets  Optimize for iOS and Android  Launch under a “beta” label  Desktop traffic goes to the main site  Tablet-and-smaller traffic redirects to mobile.*  Invite feedback from users

  26. Phase 2: Learn Improve Extend  Continue testing and refining  Analyze usage reports, feedback from users  Add OS-specific enhancements  Extend device support

  27. Phase 3: Fully Responsive Design  Add desktop breakpoint  Opportunity for refinement of desktop UI  Abandon mobile.* site  Move forward with one fully responsive website that is attractive, intuitive, and engaging on all devices and screen sizes.

  28. Shibboleth Federations

  29. SAML 2.0  SAML 2.0 is a requirement of a substantial number of Shibboleth Federations.  Publishing Technology plan to offer it using the OpenAthens 2.0 implementation through Eduserv.
