Nowadays, all Origin Designations are listed in the 24/2003 on vineyard and vine. The objective of all the Origin Designations: Regulate and control vine quality in different • geographic areas from our country. • Requirements so as to have an Origin Designation: • Wines have to be elaborated in the region or in a specified place of the Origin Designation whose grapes come solely from that geographic area. • Al grapes must have some special characteristics and quality that is only obtained thanks to the geographic area in which they have been grown. • The vine has to have high prestige in the market. • So as to get the recognition of Origin Designation, there must have been five years since the vine had been recognized as product of that area.

Qualified Designations of Origin in La Rioja An upper category must be recognized for vines of Qualified Designation of Origin. -All vines which form part in a Qualified Designation of Origin, must achieve some requirements from the designation of origin. The conditions are explained in the following points. • Vines must pass some control systems since its production until its commercialization, so as to guarantee quality and quantity. • All produced vine must be bottled. • All vines so as to achieve the Qualified Origin Denomination, must have been recognized for ten years as vines from a Denomination of Origin. • There must exist a cartographic delimitation, formed by villages, of all the territories which are able to elaborate vines. Those villages form part in the Origin Designation. In Spain, there are only two qualified designations of origin: Rioja and Priorato (Priorat in Catalan).
RIOJA RIOJA Desi Designation gnation of of Origin Origin • Rioja is the most ancient wine region of Spain, and nowadays, it is the most famous one. • Placed in the north of Spain, its extension is along the Ebro River.
Limits : Placed between the Demanda Mountain Range and the Cantabrian one. Production areas: Rioja Alta (Rioja villages and Burgos ones), Rioja Baja (villages of La Rioja and Navarra) , Rioja Alavesa (Some villages from Alava, a region of the Basque Country). Soils: All vineyards are placed in calcareous clay soils in high areas and ferruginous clay soil in the area near the rivers. Climate: Mixture of Mediterranean (Common in the Ebro valley) and Atlantic one (as it is near the Cantabrian Sea). We find mild temperatures and stable rains (350-450 mm per year). There are so many sun-light hours per year (2.800 more or less) and the height of the vineyards is about 350-650 m. This area is special for cultivating vineyard thanks to those climate conditions.
