Annual Profections • A timing technique that shows when certain themes are more active in a person’s life • All parts of chart not equally active all the time • Specific natal placements activated that year
When? • Runs from one birthday to the next • If you know how old someone is, you know the profection year they’re in. • One of very few things in astrology that is same for everyone at the same ages

Age 27 = 4th house profection year *
* Age 20 = 9th house profection year
Profection year themes • 1 st house – Bodily matters, appearance, identity • 2 nd house – Income, property, finances • 3 rd house - Siblings, education, communication • 4 th house – Home, parents, family, ancestry • 5 th house – Children, pregnancy, sexuality, creativity • 6 th house – Illness/injury, work, coworkers/employee
Profection year themes • 7 th house – Relationships, marriage, divorce • 8 th house – Debts, joint finances, death, loss • 9 th house – Higher education, religion, travel • 10 th house – Career, public recognition, supervisors • 11 th house – Friends, groups, networking • 12 th house – Hospitals, prison, solitude, ashrams
Internal/External • These activated themes can either be obvious and external, or more subtle and in the background • Since something is activated every year, major events aren’t going to be happening all the time, but will still be some sort of focus there

12 Year Cycle • The cycle starts over at age 12, repeating each house’s themes every twelve years. • Use multiples of 12 as a shortcut for calculating – 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84

Transits • Transits one variable between profection repetitions • Profections also activate the transits to and from house ruler • Transits to and from that planet become more important that year
Timing by Transit • If major, specific external event that year, generally triggered by a transit • Topic shown by profected house and where ruler is placed • The timing you watch is transits to or from ruler of the profected house • Transits through profected house also can time events
Traditional Rulerships • Traditional rulerships used for house rulers and transits • Capricorn and Aquarius ruled by Saturn • Aries and Scorpio ruled by Mars • Pisces ruled by Jupiter
Age 31 = 8th house profection year Transits to and from Saturn
Age 38 = 3rd house profection year
Age 23 = 12th house profection year
Relationship with Planetary Cycles • Overlaps between profection years and outer planet cycles (Jupiter onward) can lend additional insights • Intensifies transit if these planets are placed in those houses
Jupiter Cycle • Annual profections and the Jupiter cycle are both 12-year cycles • However, involve totally different houses and themes most of the time • Jupiter is about expansion; profections are about whichever houses and planets are activated
Ages of Overlap • Jupiter return happens at ages 11-12, 23-24, etc. depending on chart specifics • Annual profection ages are always the same: 11 is a 12 th house profection year • 12 is a 1 st house profection year • 23 is a 12 th house profection year • 24 is a 1 st house profection year
• Can be confused with each other, but their natures are very different • Great difficulties sometimes happen during 12 th house years, unrelated to Jupiter • They can happen simultaneously but involve different areas of life • If Jupiter happens to be in 1st house, emphasized and topical
Saturn return • Commonly ages 27-31 • 4 th , 5 th , 6 th , 7 th , 8 th house profections • Home, having children, injury/illness, marriage/divorce, and loss common themes • Example: Saturn natally placed in 6 th house, at age 29 those significations are heightened during Saturn return
Midlife Transits • Saturn opposite Saturn • Uranus opposite Uranus • Commonly ages 41-43 • 6th, 7th, 8th house profections • Issues of injury/illness, marriage/divorce, loss/mortality • If Saturn or Uranus natally placed in these houses during opposition, transit will be heightened
