Who to Include? • Any adult patient >16 years • Elective or emergency abdominal surgery patients • Any operative approach • Any abdominal incision
Which specialty? • Any major abdominal surgery procedure across general surgery, transplant surgery, vascular surgery, gynaecology and urology specialties.
Which procedures? • Visceral resections (single or multiple) • Stoma reversal • Open repairs of abdominal aneurysms or vascular bypass procedures • Hernia • Transplant surgery
Which procedures to exclude ? • Abdominal surgeries without visceral resection • C-sections • Groin and primary hernias that are not incisional • Vascular surgeries with no abdominal incision • Trauma surgeries
Which procedures to exclude ? • Procedures performed without an abdominal incision • Elective day case • Multiple surgeries for a single patient
Example 1: 50 year old gentlemen comes into hospital for a planned rectopexy. Should he be included as a patient for RECON?
Example 2: A 65 year old gentlemen undergoes an emergency surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. In theatre he has an endovascular repair of the aneurysm. Should he be included as a patient for RECON?
Example 3: 65 year old woman undergoes an elective laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for a colonic cancer. Should she be included as a patient for RECON?
Example 4: A 35 year old woman undergoes emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen following trauma to the abdomen. In theatre the surgeon performs a splenic repair. Should she be included as a patient for RECON?
Summary • Include all consecutive patients who are eligible • If in doubt check the appendix in the protocol or check with your regional lead / STARSurg steering committee.
