INTRODUCTION Litchi is one of emerging fruit of Pakistan It is originated from east (China and India) and spread over the subtropical regions of the world. It is grown commercially in many countries such as Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Israel, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Myanmar, Pakistan, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and U.S. (Florida, Hawaii, California)
C ONTI ’.. Pakistan produces 3000 tons of litchi which is 0.13% of world production It may cost approximately $5/kg at the farm gate Though countries having low production of litchi, export this fruit, Pakistan does not export it despite a sizeable production The rural women play a vital role in various agricultural operations, food production and food security.

The role of women varies between and within regions and changing rapidly across the world where the economic and social development is dependent upon agriculture sector
OBJECTIVES To assess the role of women in cultivation of litchi fruit To investigate contribution of women in hoeing, weeding and irrigation of litchi orchards. To find out the role of women in harvesting, grading and storage of litchi fruit.

METHODOLOGY Khanpur (Punjkatha region)-district Haripur is located to south of capital district Haripur at 33 ° 48'53N, 72 ° 56'22 E. Questionnaire and interview protocol was adapted. Five villages namely, Dobandi, Ghari Syedaan, Julian, Pind Gakhra and Kotha No of people interviewed= 50 (10 from each of five villages)

P ARTICIPATORY ROLE OF WOMEN Cultivation of litchi and role of women Land preparation Not directly involve in digging of pits but they add house hold manure to the crop women are playing a part in enhancing fertility of the soil through adding farm yard manure. Planting/ layering They help in keeping the plants in safe condition till transplanting. Irrigation/watering Women help in watering when layering of plant is done
C ONTI ’… Weeding, cleaning and hoeing No need in established orchards so little work is done by men Protection Protect from livestock, birds, human etc. particularly when fruit ripens Harvesting of litchi and role of women Plucking/harvesting of fruit Women do not take part in plucking of fruit due to cultural barriers Grading No grading mechanism is practiced in packing of litchi fruit.
C ONTI ’… Storage Fruit normally used fresh or sold out Marketing of litchi and role of women Marketing No role of women in transporting it to market or Selling of litchi fruit
E CONOMIC P ROSPECTIVE The litchi orchard gave them good financial return in short period of time, being short rotation fruit crop. Labor’s employment for men in litchi cultivation was observed slightly greater Women labor share generally were recorded very meager in field due cultural barrier All practices mentioned as above were being carried out by married and old aged women
C ONTI ’… One packing of 10kg was received Rupees 1500/2000 in local markets. One of tree may yield 25 kg to 4 mound of fruit during a season More than 4000 tree on respondents families If 0ne tree give 25kg of fruit in season then 4000 tree yielding 10,000kg of fruit during a season. If the price is 150 per kg= 4000 kg of fruit give 1500000 rupees
CONCLUSION There is good potential of participation of women in litchi cultivation by contributing their labor towards planting, land preparation, protection etc. Thus relieving men folk for alternate jobs to augment family income. An awareness raising and training programme is urgently needed for the women folk to enhance their knowledge in litchi farming to raise the socio-economic conditions
