Materials for a better future Steel Slag Aggregate Project Qatar Steel Slag: A valuable national resource Natasha Politoudi Project Manager EBM Qatar
Key numbers Qatar slag project • Existing stocks > 2.5m tons • Raw slag generation ≈ 500k tpa • Equipment production capacity 50k tpm • Planned expansion capacity Up to 100k tpm • Total slag volume: • Over 2yrs 3.5m tons • Over 5yrs 5.0m tons • Over 10yrs 7.5m tons
Radiation safety • All kinds of materials in the world have certain amounts of radiation. • There is no material with zero radiation! • Members of the public are exposed to natural or man-made radiation everyday. • IAEA is the international organization for nuclear safety with 168 member States (Qatar is a member State).
Materials (exemption limits) IAEA & Europe: 1000 Bq/kg Germany: 200 Bq/kg Qatar: 185 Bq/kg If radiation in a material < exemption limit: Safe for humans No monitoring control in usage
Some examples (World Nuclear Association) 10 TBq: 1kg of 50-year old vitrified nuclear waste 1 MBq: 1kg of low level radioactive waste 1000 Bq: 1kg of coffee 1kg of granite 400 Bq: 1kg of Brazilian nuts 140 (avg.): Bq: 1kg of Qatar slag
Some examples (dose) 1,200 μ Sv Radiation dose when flying from Doha to Paris once a month for a year. 400 μ Sv Average radiation dose from intake of food per person for a year. 29.2 μ Sv Spending 8 hours on a road made with Qatar slag everyday for a year (ACES field tests). << 1 flight
Qatar Slag study • Radiation blind testing conducted by 3 independent consultants/ labs from Germany, UK and France. • A total number of 69 samples were collected by certified Radiation Protection Expert and dispatched to respective countries. • Each lab reported their results and conclusions.
3 rd party verification • Certified by government and IAEA: Germany: IAF – Radioökologie GmbH UK: Socotec UK limited France: Radio-Protect
3 rd party conclusions • The Qatar Slag: Is exempted from any monitoring requirement Can be used up to 100% in all layers of the roads Should be treated as a normal aggregate in terms of transportation, storage & handling Is safe
Quotes from accredited German consultant “The slags tested by IAF are below the exemption and clearance levels under current German regulations that are much stricter than EU and IAEA exemption levels”. “Under European and German regulations all the materials can be used as construction material for outdoor roads and even 100% aggregate for concrete for indoor use …”
German accredited lab: Radiation Free Declaration “Qatar Slag is ‘Radiation free’ as per European and German norms” .
UK Slag (used in road surface)
Qatar Slag license MME is allowing up to 40% usage in limited applications.
Summary • The Qatar Slag is undeniably safe • 100% manufactured in Qatar • Provides stable supply to the local market • Consistent in quality • Strategic to the Nation
