English 9 EN- ENGLISH 09 Prerequisite: English 8 • Focuses on speaking, listening, and academic reading and writing skills. • Through exploration and reading of several genres of fiction, non - fiction, drama, and poetry, students will begin to learn to critically respond to literary elements in prose and poetry. • Students will be expected to begin developing sophisticated reading and writing skills for further development in grades 10-12.
Math 9 MA- MATH 09 Prerequisite: Math 8 • Topics include Rational numbers, Exponent Laws, Polynomials, Solving Linear Equations, Scale diagrams, Probability, and Finance. • Students taking this course can progress to Foundations and Pre-Calculus Math 10.
Socials 9 SS -SOCIAL STUDIES 09 Prerequisite : Humanities 8 or Social Studies 8 • Social Studies 9 is a required course and will include content from 1750-1919. • Students will inquire about how emerging ideas and ideologies profoundly influence societies and events; the physical environment influences the nature of political, social, and economic change; and, disparities in power alter the balance of relationships between individuals and between societies.
Science 9 SC -SCIENCE 09 Prerequisite: Science 8 Big Ideas: • Cells are derived from cells. • The electron arrangement of atoms impacts their chemical nature. • Electric current is the flow of electric charge. • The biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere are interconnected, as matter cycles and energy flows through them. • Typical activities: lectures, projects, demonstrations, and labs.

ELECTIVES – HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THEM? THINGS TO CONSIDER: • They allow you to explore areas of interest - finding out what you like and do not like is an essential part of job discovery. Electives can also teach you skills for life. • They are needed for post secondary studies • They should NOT be chosen because your friend chose it. Once in a course you must complete it.

GRAD PLAN RULES 1. MUST HAVE A TOTAL OF 80 CREDITS 1 course = 4 credits, typically 32 credits/year (8 courses/yr.), 16 credits must be at the Grade 12 Level to grad 2. MUST HAVE A FINE ARTS OR APPLIED SKILLS COURSE (almost all electives are one or the other - see course calendar) 3. MUST COMPLETE CAREER LIFE EXPLORATIONS, CAREER LIFE CONNECTIONS AND CAPSTONE PROJECT 4. MUST COMPLETE ALL REQUIRED COURSES As indicated by grade level on the course selection form
High school Assessments 1. Most courses will have a final exam, prepared by the classroom teacher. 2. With the new curriculum changes you will be required to write both a numeracy and literacy assessment prior to graduation.
