Objectives: ◦ To improve the organizational and managerial structure of production through strengthening the organizational and managerial capacities of smallholders ◦ To improve the quality of agricultural products and reduce post-harvest losses through strengthening productive capacities in terms of production techniques, management and value addition ◦ To increase the income of smallholders through the provision of appropriate technologies for conservation and value addition Key activities: ◦ Technology transfer through the set-up of a community centre (Centre of Excellence) for conservation and packaging purpose in rural areas; ◦ Skills development in the field of conservation, management, accounting and certification process; ◦ Dissemination of good practices, norms and standards at community levels; ◦ Value addition through simple packaging methods (cutting and packaging) UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION WWW.UNIDO.ORG 2

  4. Project sites: 1. Vegetable value chain in Hanoi for 4 districts: Gia Lam, Phuc Tho, Hoai Duc, and Dong Anh 2. Mango value chain in Mekong river delta for 3 provinces: Tien Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long Technical assistance: 1. Survey 2. Capacity building & skills development 3. Survey -3 provinces in Mekong river delta: Vinh Long, Dong Thap and Tien Giang -The survey shows that the post-harvest loss of mango is 26,9%, due to the following main reasons: (1) Wrong technology and collection timing affecting the quality and storage time of mangoes; (2) Unsuitable transport means physically damaging the post harvest mangoes; (3) Not applying the antifumigants, especially for the Anthracnose Fungus; (4) Not storing harvested products in the right temperature conditions; (5) Having no solution to avoid mango latex thereby reducing product values. 6 UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION WWW.UNIDO.ORG

Capacity building and skills development - Provide training on post harvest technology for 250 people as farmers, cooperatives, local extension staffs, and companies in 3 provinces Vinh Long, Dong Thap and Tien Giang. - Advance training on mango quality management along the value chain for 30 companies and staffs of SIAEP - Study tour to Australia - Develop manuals, quality standards and diagram of technology transfer 7 UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION WWW.UNIDO.ORG

Model on Center of Excellence for harvesting, packing house operations, storage and transport of mango - Located in Cao Lanh, Dong Thap province - The model with capacity of 30 tons of fresh mangoes/day, equiped with mango desapping system, treatment tank with hot water and fungicides, washing machine system, mango drying unit, mango ripening system, cool storage system of 320 m3 for about 60 tons, solar energy system capacity 12kW, and other instrument & tools including pallet, packing table, hardness detector, brix equipment, temperature and humidity monitoring, ethylene monitoring - At pre-harvest in orchards: disease management - At harvest: introduced new technique of de-sapping, improved picking pole, basket contaminating, residucal sap rememaining etc. - Standard compliance and Market development 8 UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION WWW.UNIDO.ORG

UNIDO approach’s to strengthen agro-value chains through Center of Excellence -The center proposes appropriate models and technologies to improve the quality of agricultural products, reduce post-harvest losses, increase the income of smallholders and improve the organizational and managerial production structure in rural areas. -It represents an entrepreneurial development pole for producers and entrepreneurs and value addition of agri-food products. -It provides multidisciplinary services including vocational technical training, demonstration of agri-food processes – including use of equipment - and entrepreneurship management. -Furthermore, the center will operate as a private entity in terms of management, built around promising sectors and targeting youth and women in rural areas.
