  1. Priority and Planning in Reef and Coastal Ecosystem CBD Capacity Building Workshop Ria Saryanthi, Burung Indonesia Bangkok, 28 June 2016

  2. WALLACEA HOTSPOT

  3. BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE Forest ecosystem: primary forest, monsoon forest, dry forest Karst ecosystem Freshwater ecosystem: swamps, rivers, volcanic lakes Marine ecosystem: coral reefs, sea grass, mangrove, ocean trenches, sea mounts

  4. BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE - Important populations of globally widespread species - High endemism of fauna and flora Hawksbill Turtle/Critically endangered - Site-specific species: many species found at only one site or two sites

  5. SPECIES OUTCOMES Status Terrestrial Marine TOTAL (IUCN) and freshwater Critically 32 3 35 endangered Endangered 83 25 108 Vulnerable 193 224 417 TOTAL 308 252 560 Elegant Sunbird (Endangered)

  6. SITE OUTCOMES Key Biodiversity Areas Sub-region/ Terrestrial KBA Marine KBA Total KBA Country Maluku 50 40 90 Nusa Tenggara 83 41 124 Sulawesi 95 47 142 Timor-Leste 23 12 35 Wallacea 251 140 391

  7. SITE OUTCOMES Protected Status of KBAs Sub-region/ Protected Partly Non Protected Country Protected Maluku 3 8 79 Nusa Tenggara 15 33 76 Sulawesi 18 31 93 Timor-Leste 9 0 26 Wallacea 45 72 274

  8. SITE OUTCOMES Ridge-to-Reef KBAs 64 terrestrial KBAs are directly linked to 58 marine KBAs: - 27 terrestrial KBAs are islands surrounded by marine KBAs - 37 terrestrial and marine KBAs share a boundary

  9. CORRIDOR OUTCOMES Defining Corridors 10 terrestrial corridors – forests on each large island 16 marine corridors – ecological processes and migratory routes

  10. MARINE PRIORITIES 16 marine corridors were identified 5 corridors are priorities based on their rank for biological importance, proximity to terrestrial clusters, funding need

  11. NATIONAL PRIORITY • Conservation areas target: 2015: 16.5 million ha (165,000 km 2 ); 2020: 20 million ha - (200,000 km 2 ) • Restoration of coastal areas : - 2015: 50 sites; 2020: 85 sites • Effective management of coastal areas: - 2015: 17 sites; 2020: 35 sites • Establishment of local conservation areas at district/provincial level • Conservation and management of ecosystem essential outside of PAs: mangroves, karst, corridors • Small islands ecosystem
