Developing a 3-D Printable Stage for Microscopy (SCBEjr02) Done by: Tan Hon Jung Dillon Phang Chun Wei
Introduction In this research project, we aim to prototype a stage for microscopes ● which are 3D printable, making them both cost effective and relatively easy to make. It also cuts down on the time required to make a single unit of such model. After one entire year of planning, research and trials, we have finally ● came up with our design of the 3D printable stage. During the entire testing phase of our experiment, we had to constantly ● keep in mind the various requirements we are trying to hit, such that the objectives of the whole research is met.

Problem Identified Despite its wide use, microscopes remain costly and massive ● OMAX 40X-2500X Full Size Lab Digital Trinocular Compound LED ● Microscope With 14MP USB Camera and 3D Mechanical Stage $615.99 ○ Due to its high costs, microscopes may not be readily available for the ● masses to use and because of its many steel components, it is very heavy to bring around Therefore, our prototype serves as a light-weight, cheaper and equally ● powerful alternative for microscopes.
Methodology Sketchup ● The structure of the microscope was broken up into the key ○ components of the stage, base, connecting rod, lens holder and microscope holder. Each component was designed separately 3D printing Filament ● Provide a durable, strong yet lightweight material ○ Weistek Ideawerk Super Fast 3D Printer ● Allows for efficient printing of the various parts of the microscope ○ to be assembled

Comparison Microscope Model Costs of individual components Total Cost (SGD) (SGD) OMAX 40X-2500X Full Size Lab Digital $615.99 Trinocular Compound LED Microscope With 14MP USB Camera and 3D Mechanical Stage This project Jiusion 40 to 1000x Magnification Endoscope, 8 LED USB 2.0 Digital $122.77 Microscope - $20.99 [3] Bulb - $1.90 Screws - $0.80/10 screws ESUN 3D Filament PLA Yellow (1kg) - $22.99 [1] Amscope 4X Plan Achromatic Objective Lens with Knurled Ring - $28.53 [5] Amscope 10X Plan Achromatic Objective Lens with Knurled Ring - $47.56 [5]
Limitations 3D printing filament is not as durable and strong as compared to metals ● and other materials used in commercially sold microscopes. Additional time and work is needed as the microscope would need to be ● assembled manually after the various parts have been printed out. Parts of the microscope my go through wear and tear after long-term ● use, causing certain parts of the microscope to possibly loosen. A laptop or device that can portray images is needed to accompany the ● microscope in order for the specimen to be viewed.
