Learning in the Foundation Stage The Foundation Stage is the stage of education for children from three to the end of the Reception year. The Foundation Stage Curriculum is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning .
The curriculum is organised into the following areas of learning:
Prime Area Personal, Social and Emotional Development The children will learn to: • develop a positive sense of themselves and others • form positive relationships and develop respect for others • develop social skills • learn how to manage their feelings • have confidence in their own abilities
Prime Area Communication and Language The children will learn to: • develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves • speak and listen in a range of situations
Prime Area Physical Development The children will learn to: • be active • to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. • understand the importance of physical activity • to make healthy choices in relation to food
Specific Area Literacy The children will learn to: • link sounds and letters • read and write familiar words • use a pencil effectively. • develop an enthusiasm for reading and writing • listen to, read and share a wide range of reading materials

Specific Area Mathematics The children will learn to develop and improve their skills in: • counting • understanding and using numbers • calculating simple addition and subtraction problems • describing shapes, spaces, and measures
Specific Area Understanding the World The children will: • explore and find out about the world around them • use and explore everyday technology • find out about people and places • find out about different cultures and beliefs
Specific Area Expressive Arts and Design The children will: • use a wide range of media and materials • have the opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through art, music, movement, dance, roleplay and design and technology.
Monitoring Progress We keep an ongoing record of your child’s progress in school in their learning journey book and we value contributions from you. At the end of the year we assess your child's progress against each of the early learning goals.

Pre-School Visits • Today’s visit and the visit on Thursday 20th June (9:15-10:30) are to familiarise your children with the school, staff and current Reception pupils. • On July 1 1 th we have our ‘Up the Bus’ day where your children will be in their new classroom (9:15-10:30) with their new class teachers and teaching assistant.
