Benefits of Using Visual Aids • Creates more interest for the audience • Helps the audience understand material better • Helps the audience retain information longer • Helps the speaker feel less anxious!
Traditional Aids • Objects • Models • Charts • Graphs • Photographs/drawings
Technological Aids • Video clips (keep to 30 – 45 seconds) • Audio (do not play in the background!) • PowerPoint/slideshow/Prezi
PPT Suggestions • Embed video or audio into the slides • Be mindful of your color scheme (background color versus text color) • Animation (avoid too much!) • Limit the amount of text (6 x 6 rule) and number of slides

Guidelines for Using Visual Aids • Practice your speech using the visual and timing yourself • Use to accomplish the goals of your speech • Should help the audience understand your topic better • Keep your eye contact on the audience rather than the aid • Keep visual out of sight when not being discussed
Other Reminders … • The visual aid WILL count towards your speech time – plan accordingly! • If using a PPT, bring on a thumb drive and also email yourself • Set up PPTs before speeches begin for the day
