Games background Canadian Francophone Games The JeuxFC are a CELEBRATION of Canada’s French-speaking youth, a SIGNIFICANT MOMENT for these youths to build their cultural identity, an excellent opportunity to DEVELOP and SURPASS oneself and a KEY event that each community wishes to host. The JeuxFC are based on the BY YOUTH, FOR YOUTH philosophy and not only respect, but contribute to SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT principles. The JeuxFC are: − A UNIQUE FORMULA where artistic contests, leadership training and sports competitions are held simultaneously, in French; − A FESTIVE EVENT - with nearly 1,200 participants and a professional development opportunity for over 500 volunteers and officials; − A C ANADIAN EVENT TO TAKE ONE ’ S PLACE and showcase cultural pride, self-confidence and leadership abilities among youth in a context of sharing and healthy competition; − A F ÉDÉRATION DE LA JEUNESSE CANADIENNE - FRANÇAISE initiative, with the support of the Government of Canada. Economic impact of the 2017 Games The total economic impact is $ 3.8 million and the equivalent of 101 person-year jobs in the Moncton-Dieppe region. Both cities raised more than $ 236,000 in property taxes. The 2017 CF Games in Moncton-Dieppe welcomed approximately 15,000 visitors. These visitors represent 6,741 different people, including 1,165 participants (youth and adult) and 2,873 tourists. The number of local residents has been estimated at 2,763 different people.
Informations Overview In 2020, Victoria will host the Canadian Francophone Games – the largest gathering of Canadian French-speaking young people. The Games are focused on sport, art and leadership competitions. The Games provide opportunities to showcase culture, self- confidence and leadership in a friendly and competitive setting. In short, the Canadian Francophone Games are the primary celebration of French- speaking youth in Canada. The Games contribute to the socio-cultural and identity development of young Canadians between 14 and 18 years old who speak French. The Canadian Francophone Games are a Fédération de la jeunesse canadienne- française (French Canadian Youth Federation) initiative, with financial support from the Government of Canada (Canadian Heritage). Games Dates The eighth edition of the Games will be held in Victoria July 14 to 18, 2020 – five days of competitions and events. The first games were held in 1999 in New-Brunswick and since then, have been staged every three years. In 2020, B.C. will host the Games for the first time. Games Events More than 1,200 young people from every province and territory will participate in the Games. Games competitors are aged 14 to 18. The Games feature more than 90 competitions in 13 disciplines in art, leadership and sports. We will award more than 400 medals.
Games background Structure There are two organizations involved in organizing the Games: FJCF and the Host Committee. Part of the FJCF , the Conseil jeunesse francophone de la Colombie-Britannique (BC Francophone Youth Council, hereinafter CJFCB) has the key role of recruiting the BC participants for the Games. CJFCB is an organisation managed by and for youths. Its mission is to promote, develop and represent the interests of British Colombia’s French-speaking youths through the development of the French language and of francophone culture as well as through hosting province-wide youth events. The CJFCB has been working for the community since 1989. The Francophone Games could involve 1,200 registered participants and 700 volunteers and o ffi cials from across Canada. The participants will compete in one of four artistic disciplines, four leadership/ coop disciplines or six sport disciplines over five days of competition. Since the first Games in 1999, no less than 20,000 people have been involved. The Games provide extraordinary encounters; an exciting francophone experience; and a schedule rich in festivities. Opening and closing ceremonies: Willow Park • Arts, leadership and sport competitions: Oak Bay High School • Track and field: University of Victoria or Oak Bay High School • Sailing: Canadian Forces Sailing Association, Esquimalt • Arts gala: To be determined • Participants will stay at Oak Bay High School and Willows Elementary School Volunteer Opportunities The local organizing committee is looking for more than 500 volunteers to help stage the games. Roles include: transportation services, food services, spectator and community services and participant services. As the games are an assembly point for Francophones from across the country, local volunteers are expected to have the basic ability to communicate in French to welcome and support Games participants.
Informations Local Organizing The local organizing committee is La Société du comité d’organisation des Jeux de la francophonie canadienne de 2020 à Victoria (Victoria 2020 Canadian Francophone Games Organizing Committee). The local committee has a nine-member board – three are under the age of 25. The committee will be staffed by an executive director and around 12 employees during the Games preparation phase (from now until 2020). The backbone of the team is made up of more than 500 volunteers mainly from Victoria but also surrounding communities such as Greater Vancouver and the island. All are welcome. People from other provinces have already committed their volunteer assistance. Games Benefits The games are a major cultural event to showcase the Greater Victoria area. Tourism and economic revenues from hosting this event are estimated at $2 million from 2018 to 2020 in direct investment with more indirect tourism revenues in the four communities hosting the Games. The Games will help increase the visibility of the Francophone community in B.C. and will be a stepping stone for youth who wish to prepare for international Games such as the international “Jeux de la francophonie 2021” in New- Brunswick. The games will give volunteers a chance to practice their French language skills and be part of an entertaining cultural event.
