  5. GEF-6 BD Strategy The GEF-6 Biodiversity (BD) Strategy comprises 10 programs The GEF supports the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol under Program 8 (Implementing the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing) of the BD Strategy GEF funds will specifically support the following core activities under Program 8: ❖ Stocktaking and assessment (laws, policies, user rights, institutional capacity, intellectual property rights) ❖ Implementation of ABS measures (institutional agreements, administrative procedures for PIC and MAT, monitoring, compliance) ❖ Building capacity among stakeholders to negotiate between providers and users of genetic resources

  6. Project context: PIF Project concept (PIF) is approved, and included in the GEF Work Program Estimated Total Project Cost of US$ 28.6M, comprising: ❖ US$ 6.2 million from the GEF Trust Fund ❖ US$ 22.2m from co-financing sources Implementation period: 5 years GEF Agency: UNDP National lead implementing partners: DEA Other entities involved in implementation: CSIR, ARC, SANBI, DST, UNDP-SGP, Provincial governments: (NC, WC, FS, NW)

  11. Project Objective To strengthen the value chains for products derived from genetic resources that contribute to the equitable sharing of benefits and the conserv rvation of biodiversity

  12. Key concepts 1 Bioprospecting BIOECONOMY 2 Wildlife Sub-Sectors

  13. Bioprospecting definition Research on, or development or application of, indigenous biological/genetic resources for commercial or industrial exploitation and includes: • the systematic search, collection or gathering of such resources or making extractions from such resources; • the utili ilization of information regarding any traditional uses of such resources by indigenous communities; • the research on, or the application, development or modif ification of such traditional uses for commercial exploitation; • the tradin ing in and exporting of indigenous biological/genetic resources in order to develop and produce products, such as medic icin ines, in industri rial enzymes, food fla lavors, fra ragra rances, cosmetic ics, colors, ext xtra racts and essential l oils ils.

  14. The project concept Strategic focus for project objectives and outcomes: ❖ Strengthening the value creation chain (both for bio-prospecting and bio io-trade) of indigenous flora that have been associated with traditional medicinal use; ❖ Building coll llaborativ ive partnerships (state-research institutions- community-private sector) in the commercialisation of these flora; and ❖ Improving the conservatio ion status of these flora in their natural habitats.

  15. Project Components BIOPROSPECTING R&D 1 Research and development of products in line with Nagoya Protocol’s definition of the utilization of genetic resources VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT 2 Cooperation models for the conservation of, and commercial trade in, indigenous bioproducts ABS CAPACITY BUILDING OF KEY STAKEHOLDERS 3 Bioprospecting and value addition knowledge transfer for an equitable benefit sharing

  16. The project concept streamlined Target species • Pelargonium siodides (African Geranium) • Aloe ferox • Siphonochilus aethiopicus (African Ginger) The Northern Cape Bioprospecting Hub ABS Capacity building

  17. BIOPROSPECTING R&D 1 Component 1 Outputs Output 1.1) Undertake clinical studies, registration of Siphonochilus aethiopicus (African Ginger) to treat inflammatory and allergic diseases Output 1.2) Bioprospecting Research & Development Hub Northern Cape for bioproducts

  18. 2 VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT Component 2 Outputs 1 of 2 Output 2.1) Support implementation of the Pelargonium Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) Output 2.2) Field propagation of A. ferox on communal land

  19. 2 VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT Component 2 Outputs 2 of 2 Output 2.3) Support community-based enterprises in honeybush farming Output 2.4) Cultivation of African Ginger Output 2.5) Strengthening ABS implementation in Rooibos farming

  20. 3 ABS CAPACITY BUILDING OF KEY STAKEHOLDERS Component 3 Outputs Output 3.1) ABS + Nagoya protocol information management and communications Output 3.2) Provide an extension, training and capacity building service linked to the Northern Cape bioprospecting R&D hub
