Potassium guidelines for maize: Fertasa 27 July 2016 Dr. Erik Adriaanse
Previous FSSA potassium (K) guidelines for maize Topsoil threshold values 80 and 120 mg K/kg 120 mg K/kg > 25 % clay - Based on Research at 53% clay with low subsoil reserves: K-applications = 0 – 156 kg/ha 80 mg K/kg < 25% clay – Based on assumption that sandy soils contain higher utilizable K-reserves in the subsoil: K-applications = 0 – 100 kg/ha Yield potential 2 – 12 t/ha Basis of recommendations in tables is not clear. Maintaining momentum 2

New Fertasa potassium guidelines for maize - summary Topsoil (0 – 200 mm) threshold = 80 mg/kg with high subsoil reserves (> 20 mg/kg) Low and uncertain production potential (2 – 9 ton/ha) – band place slightly more than expected removal over a long period to reach threshold – maintain. Topsoil (0 – 200 mm) threshold = 120 mg/kg with low subsoil reserves (< 20 mg/kg) High and more certain production potential (7 – 20 ton/ha) – rectify threshold values by band placement and broadcast applications over a relatively short period – maintain. Profile (0 – 600 mm) threshold = 300 kg/ha = 29 – 56 mg/kg (1.7 - 0.9 g/cm3) Provided there are no physical or chemical restrictions in this part of the profile Check economic justification Maintaining momentum 21
